If you've been reading along skip to #9. There's a question down there.

Ok, this one was fun. If it's not one thing it's 3 others.

Recap:

1. Bus stopped idling. Had to keep my foot in it. Died every time the
clutch went in, even at-speed.

2. Bought a new set of points. I've had this issue before and thought
maybe the bus was eating them. Pulled cap off and installed points are
in excellent shape. Even still gaped right. Dragged a points file
through the gap and met no resistance so no hidden pits/mounds.

3. Looked at fuel filter. Nasty stuff in bottom. Cool weather making it
a little hard for me to grip stuff so I called a friend to change it
for me. Had him remove the ratty looking accordion heater tube while he
was under there.

4. No change. No idle. Hearing clicks when engaging the ignition so up
to this point I was assuming the idle cutoff solenoid was good.

Uhhh, I have a box with *3* relays sitting over by my battery. They
allow me to have the test cable at the back for starting/running and
they provide full generator/battery voltage to the coil and to the
starter relay when engaged rather than whatever voltage happens to make
it back there through 30+ feet of 40 year old wire to the ignition
switch.

CLICK CLICK CLICK!

5. Put my fingertips on the idle cutoff solenoid while turning the
ignition on/off. There should be a SOLID SNAP! when doing that. There
wasn't. Pulled it out and tested it. It *would* pull in but only if one
lightly pushed the plunger when applying power. And it would pop righ
back out if shaken.

6. Clipped the plunger, pulled the power wire, reinstalled.

7. HURRAY! Bus runs great again.

8. Several short trips to the store and stuff. then, 20 miles out to my
storage garage. Arrived. The bus kind of wound down when I pulled in
but didn't "just die" like the idle problem. Hung out an hour or so
loading stuff and poking around (it's 2400 sq. feet that had all my
belongings tossed in by lots of 'helpers' I have no idea what is where).

Got ready to leave. Bus won't start. Try for about 10 minutes. Weather
is 60's in the day and 30's at night. It's 4pm. Called the rescue truck
with tow bar (which is no down with an intake gasket leak, bleeding
green stuff all over the place).

Got back to the office. It's been a couple of hours now. Turn the key.
Bus fires right up.

Must be vapor lock. Why would I have vapor lock at sea level in 60
degree weather? Must be because of the removed heater tube.

9. reinstalled heater tube yesterday. Wen to take helper home (he was
looking at the truck). Fired up and idle fine. For about 5 minutes.
Made it about 70 feet total from carport to parking lot out front.

Pushed it back into the carport. That's where it was waiting for the
temps to get over 50 today.

Is there an e-clip design that will grip a smooth pin that doesn't have
an e-clip groove cut in it? This question is relevant to the problem.

THIS ---> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nUa6J5W5Ncs was the problem.
