Well how many old Hondas and Toyotas do you see? Those 70s 80s "economy" cars
will probably never be collectible and will never have the status of the
aircooled VW.

Wow, my Eurovans did better than that. I can honestly say I've never owned a
Vanagon. I would like a Doka Synchro but that's about as far as I'd go with
it. Regrettably we'll lose and continue to lose more Vanagons and Bays and
Splits because of neglect and nuisance laws more than the CARS program
promotes.
What's strange is...
Do you ever see any Dashers? Sciroccos? Rabbits (except cabriolets)?
It seems like a lot of the A1 and A2 series just disappeared. Maybe it was
that Pennsylvanian Sheet Metal? I have to believe that a Rabbit may be more
rare than a split bus.

Per the feds "official" mileage figures, it's 15 mpg for a '91 Vanagon with
auto and 2WD. 4 speed manual is 17 mpg. It was 15/16 in '84 - the oldest year
eligible - and was as low as 14/15 in 1986. Synchros in '86 also got 14. Best
I've ever done was 16 or so but I'm no hypermiler.
