Spark + Fuel + Air = Vroom

Check the Fuel system for gunk, also clean out your idle and pilot jets on
the carb, also if you have a bypass carb with the solenoid, check for proper
operation.

Other than that, start debugging things one at a time.  If you noticed
problems with the distributor, I would suspect that other things could be
wrong especially if you lost a part of the cap down inside it.

Anyway, that's the fun of old VWs start at one place and once you've
eliminated that variable move onto the next.
