Did you drink an extra cup of smart coffee this morning?

The "human name" of the machine where your website is run is set in DNS.
That's the "Domain Name Servers" that convert a human readable name to a
set of numbers that computers use to find each other. The actual domain is
just "hemmings.com". Anything before that in a name indicates another
server in that domain. A simplified view of a DNS record looks like this:

$ORIGIN hemmings.com.

www IN A 65.213.146.39
clubs IN A 65.213.145.158
ftp IN A 65.213.146.39

Each of the "A" sections says "the IP address for he machine called
???.$ORIGIN is www.xxx.yyy.zzz". So, "www.hemmings.com is 65.213.146.39".

The first part of those "A" records can only be a single group of letters,
no spaces or "dots" allowed unless other special changes are made to the
way the line is written so

www.clubs IN A 65.213.146.39

would not work.

To make something like that work they'd have to start writing out the lines
like this:

www.clubs.hemmings.com A 65.213.145.158

OR they would have to start a new $ORIGIN section just for
clubs.hemmings.com

$ORIGIN clubs.hemmings.com

www IN A 65.213.145.158
ftp IN A 65.213.145.158

Doing all that just starts making the DNS files hard to read and
unnecessarily long. It's not really necessary unless there are actually
completely separate server infrastructures within a single domain like at a university where each department may have it's own web srever, mail server,
etc. If www.clubs.hemmings.com is the ONLY extra name to add then it's not
worth it. But if there were www.clubs.hemmings.com and
mail.clubs.hemmings.com and lists.clubs.hemmings.com and theye were on
machines with different IP addresses it starts to become more practical

Way too much info but I hope it helps. If you ask nicely you might be able
to get Hemmings to get their IT people to add a www.clubs.hemmings.com
record.

We have a member of our club: East TX VEE DUB, that sets off the Wall

And speaking of weird things: Some one who knows more about protocol on
the internet than me please explain why our (East Tx VEE DUB Club) web site
which we have set up on Hemmings works just fine with
http://clubs.hemmings.com/etveedub/ but does not work if you use the www,
i.e., http://www.clubs.hemmings.com/etveedub/

And go to the web site and see some neat busses on the page and on
the attached show flyer.
