We have 3 members! I think my fear of wiring started as a wee small child. We had a 2-story house with a swamp cooler window unit in a second floor window. It had a copper tube which ran down to a fitting on the water pipe on the ground to supply water to the swamp cooler. When I was about 3 playing in the backyard I decided I needed a drink, went over the water faucet to turn it on. To balance myself and turn on the faucet I grabbed the copper tube with the right hand and the faucet with my left at the same time. That was my first encounter with electricity. The swamp cooler apparently had a short and had been grounding through the copper tube. Well, it was now grounding through the body of a 3-year old little boy,. Both hands were frozen to the fixtures and I could not let go. That electricity stuff does that to you. Fortunately my dad was nearby, ran over and knocked me loose from the very powerful electrical current. The only result that I had was some slightly burned hands, a large amount of scare, and a lasting fear of electricity and wiring. Had my dad not been nearby or slow in reacting to what was happening we would have one less old vintage VW guy around now. And yes, even though I was only 3, I still have a vivid memory of that event. --- On Wed, 12/14/11, Rusty Herring <rustmah1@xxxxxxx> wrote: From: Rusty Herring <rustmah1@xxxxxxx> Subject: [tcb] Re: Here's a new subject, tree collision aftereffects To: "Texas Coalition of Busses" <tcb@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Date: Wednesday, December 14, 2011, 3:28 PM i want join the IAEW!!!!! i can do most of the thinks on my vw"s but i gave up on electrical a long vtime ago>??? It would be a really dull world without both of you. And as to your knowledge of wiring: Well you are not alone. I pride myself in being a reasonably knowledgable vintage VW mechanic and know more than most about the ins and outs of these old machines. But when it comes to those things through which current flows; I feel totally incompedent. I would have never made it through school as an electrical engineering major. Those wires and current are simply foreign to me and I gave up a long time ago trying to understand it. Fortunately I have a friend who is an absolute genius on automotive wiring; and as for the house hold currents; well I have an electrical engineer who is retired from NASA who lives across the street. Maybe you and I can start a new club. We can call it IAEW; which stands for Incompetent About Electricity and Wiring. --- On Wed, 12/14/11, Denis Dodson <coocoo@xxxxxxx> wrote: From: Denis Dodson <coocoo@xxxxxxx> Subject: [tcb] Re: Here's a new subject, tree collision aftereffects To: tcb@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Date: Wednesday, December 14, 2011, 6:58 AM #yiv1172739557 .yiv1172739557ExternalClass #yiv1172739557ecxyiv988041422 ecx_filtered #yiv1172739557ecxyiv988041422 {font-family:"Cambria Math";panose-1:2 4 5 3 5 4 6 3 2 4;} #yiv1172739557 .yiv1172739557ExternalClass ecx_filtered #yiv1172739557ecxyiv988041422 {font-family:Calibri;panose-1:2 15 5 2 2 2 4 3 2 4;} #yiv1172739557 .yiv1172739557ExternalClass ecx_filtered #yiv1172739557ecxyiv988041422 {font-family:Tahoma;panose-1:2 11 6 4 3 5 4 4 2 4;} #yiv1172739557 .yiv1172739557ExternalClass #yiv1172739557ecxyiv988041422 #yiv1172739557ecxyiv988041422 p.yiv1172739557ecxyiv988041422MsoNormal, #yiv1172739557 .yiv1172739557ExternalClass #yiv1172739557ecxyiv988041422 li.yiv1172739557ecxyiv988041422MsoNormal, #yiv1172739557 .yiv1172739557ExternalClass #yiv1172739557ecxyiv988041422 div.yiv1172739557ecxyiv988041422MsoNormal {margin-bottom:.0001pt;font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"serif";} #yiv1172739557 .yiv1172739557ExternalClass #yiv1172739557ecxyiv988041422 a:link, #yiv1172739557 .yiv1172739557ExternalClass #yiv1172739557ecxyiv988041422 span.yiv1172739557ecxyiv988041422MsoHyperlink {color:blue;text-decoration:underline;} #yiv1172739557 .yiv1172739557ExternalClass #yiv1172739557ecxyiv988041422 a:visited, #yiv1172739557 .yiv1172739557ExternalClass #yiv1172739557ecxyiv988041422 span.yiv1172739557ecxyiv988041422MsoHyperlinkFollowed {color:purple;text-decoration:underline;} #yiv1172739557 .yiv1172739557ExternalClass #yiv1172739557ecxyiv988041422 p {margin-right:0in;margin-left:0in;font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"serif";} #yiv1172739557 .yiv1172739557ExternalClass #yiv1172739557ecxyiv988041422 p.yiv1172739557ecxyiv988041422msonormal, #yiv1172739557 .yiv1172739557ExternalClass #yiv1172739557ecxyiv988041422 li.yiv1172739557ecxyiv988041422msonormal, #yiv1172739557 .yiv1172739557ExternalClass #yiv1172739557ecxyiv988041422 div.yiv1172739557ecxyiv988041422msonormal {margin-right:0in;margin-left:0in;font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"serif";} #yiv1172739557 .yiv1172739557ExternalClass #yiv1172739557ecxyiv988041422 span.yiv1172739557ecxyiv988041422msohyperlink {} #yiv1172739557 .yiv1172739557ExternalClass #yiv1172739557ecxyiv988041422 span.yiv1172739557ecxyiv988041422msohyperlinkfollowed {} #yiv1172739557 .yiv1172739557ExternalClass #yiv1172739557ecxyiv988041422 span.yiv1172739557ecxyiv988041422emailstyle18 {} #yiv1172739557 .yiv1172739557ExternalClass #yiv1172739557ecxyiv988041422 p.yiv1172739557ecxyiv988041422msonormal1, #yiv1172739557 .yiv1172739557ExternalClass #yiv1172739557ecxyiv988041422 li.yiv1172739557ecxyiv988041422msonormal1, #yiv1172739557 .yiv1172739557ExternalClass #yiv1172739557ecxyiv988041422 div.yiv1172739557ecxyiv988041422msonormal1 {margin-bottom:.0001pt;font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"serif";} #yiv1172739557 .yiv1172739557ExternalClass #yiv1172739557ecxyiv988041422 span.yiv1172739557ecxyiv988041422msohyperlink1 {color:blue;text-decoration:underline;} #yiv1172739557 .yiv1172739557ExternalClass #yiv1172739557ecxyiv988041422 span.yiv1172739557ecxyiv988041422msohyperlinkfollowed1 {color:purple;text-decoration:underline;} #yiv1172739557 .yiv1172739557ExternalClass #yiv1172739557ecxyiv988041422 span.yiv1172739557ecxyiv988041422emailstyle181 {font-family:"sans-serif";color:#1F497D;} #yiv1172739557 .yiv1172739557ExternalClass #yiv1172739557ecxyiv988041422 span.yiv1172739557ecxyiv988041422EmailStyle26 {font-family:"sans-serif";color:#1F497D;} #yiv1172739557 .yiv1172739557ExternalClass #yiv1172739557ecxyiv988041422 .yiv1172739557ecxyiv988041422MsoChpDefault {} #yiv1172739557 .yiv1172739557ExternalClass ecx_filtered #yiv1172739557ecxyiv988041422 {} #yiv1172739557 .yiv1172739557ExternalClass #yiv1172739557ecxyiv988041422 div.yiv1172739557ecxyiv988041422WordSection1 {} Well, last night I went at the wiring and I don’t know crap about it. As a side: I just got back from the glass shop with two new pieces of mirror glass for the VWOA elephant ears that I am restoring. Last time I had to replace the glass in one was when the howling headwinds (70-90mph) encountered towing to the Cal classic broke the glass in one. I searched all over Anaheim and south LA trying to find a glass shop to get it fixed before OCTO and the Classic. Finally found one to cut a new glass and he charged me $35. The best glass cutter in Nacogdoches just did two of them and charged me $10. I know why people are leaving CA and moving to Texas. --- On Tue, 12/13/11, Denis Dodson <coocoo@xxxxxxx> wrote: From: Denis Dodson <coocoo@xxxxxxx> Subject: [tcb] Here's a new subject, tree collision aftereffects To: tcb@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Date: Tuesday, December 13, 2011, 12:45 PM So, much like how my ribs still hurt after more than a year, Murray is still recovering from running into that tree years ago. When I did all the body stretching and repair from kissing the tree, I had to take out the parcel tray. Years passed and I decided to put it back in. Well, guess what? Murray is not the same shape as he was! The parcel tray has to fit in to a notch on the bottom of the speedometer pod. The parcel tray was a good two plus inches from fitting in there. Murray looks OK from the outside, but not at all from the inside. So. I bought a rusted up parcel tray at the last classic and started trimming away with my cut off tool. Cut, try to fit, cut, try a again, cut more in a different place, try to fit, cut off whole end, better, still no cigar. Finally I cram and bang until it fits in to the notch. Now I have to take it out and weld in a new back and an “L” bracket to make a screw hole. OK, yea! It’s Done! Now the radio won’t work. I had to push all the wiring up under the dash to fit the parcel tray and there is no power to the radio. I am hoping that I can find the undone connection without taking out the f#!%*^! Parcel tray.
