Yes Trey, per all the authorities that I know with the ethanol gas we have now
you need to run premium.  Most stock VW engines need at least 90 octane.

And try the same plug trick with #1 and 2 and see if the engine changes sound,
it should.  If not you are missing on whichever cylinder does not change the
sound.  Do them only one at a time.  And yes you want to be careful, wear a
glove and remove the plug wire carefully, you can get bitten by one of the
sparks and it is a rather significant bite.  And put in a new set of plugs.
14,000 miles is 4,000 miles beyond the normal life of a plug in a VW engine.

Sammie,

I run regular gas in it. I didn't think you'd get any advantage running premium
in an air cooled VW engine. Am I work there , maybe a performance engine?

It's a stock 1600 DP engine from Boston Bob. I did pulled off a couple of spark
plug wires (#3 and #4) both times the engine changed sound. I pulled them off
at
the Dizzy with my fingers (Might not be a good idea as putting them back on
those wires were sparking.) Could that spark hurt me?

These engine was new 14K miles ago from Boston Bob.

Trey

#1:  Replace the plugs.  10,000 miles is about max life for plugs in an
aircooled VW engine.  If you are not running premium fuel, do so.

History:

The plugs have been in there for about 14K miles - they look good - brownish
and
dry. All look the same.

only trouble was a spec of dirt in the pilot jet last year (2011)  - bus died
on
me while heading to T@P.

I did change  the exhaust a couple of weeks ago - tool off the crappy rusty
empi
headers and installed the beetle exhaust I had on my other 71 bus.

The bus did back fire once yesterday when I started it up - well kind of half a
back fire not a full one if that makes sense, odd though.

I did check the compression on it last weekend (when I inspected the plugs) for
the heck of it. (115.115.130.130)

it did seem that the bus was running hotter when going to Brenham and then on
the way back (After it started) it ran cooler (50 degrees on #3 cylinder)

I will check the plugs today.

Trey

We still need a lot more info for diagnostics.  When did you last tune the
engine?  How old are the plugs (have you looked at them)?  Does the engine have
a noticeable miss?  You can crank the engine and remove one plug wire; does it
change the manner in which the engine is running?  If not then that plug is not
firing.  Go through this with all four cylinders.  It almost sounds like to me
like you are not getting appropriate fire to one or two cylinders.  Did you set
the timing correctly when changing the distributors?

Based on what info you have given us I suspect either an electrical misfire or
a
vacuum leak.

It revs at idle but sounds spastic as the revs increased.

....I swapped dizzies but nothing happened ( engine turned over but not fire,
but I think the compufire in that one was bad). I put the original dizzy back
in
, it turned over and sounded better when I revved the engine. I took off for
home, made it ok.
Puzzled as to what it is / was.

I'll check the timing first.

Thanks everyone.
