Yes Ronnie there is a front tranny mount on a bug, very similar to a bus.  The
feeling you describe sounds like a bad or broken front tranny mount.  I run a
solid mount in the baja and also replaced the one in the 550 (which was a
neopreme one that was broken) with a solid mount (which of course is a rear
mount in the 550 since it is mid-engine and the tranny sits backwards.).  Only
complaint on solid mounts is that they transmit noise.  In the Hummy that
shouldn't matter.  Have also heard that they can lead to broken nose cones, but
have never seen one broken from this and even if they did it should occur only
on full out drag race type starts in 1st gear.  They don't cost much, almost
any VW supplier should have one for less than $15.

Not an authority on after-market shifters, but I would think you need a means
of adjusting.  You do it in a bug or bus by loosining the bolts and moving it
around.  The holes are elongated.

Got the Hummbug running but have a couple of questions.

1.  Is there a front transmission mount on a bug?  You you take or or slow down
it feels like something is moving.
2.  I bought an EMPI trigger shifter at the Classic and can't seem to get 1 & 2
gear sorted out.  The reverse works fine, but when you come out of R it goes to
3rd & 4th.  There isn't an adjusting plate like on a bus.

Any suggestions appreciated.

Ronnie
