Betcha it's not harder to change a wheel than my bus.  Being lowered with a
type 1 swing axle I have to use a small bottle jack between the axle tube and
the frame to make the axle come down far enough to get the wheel off and even
then I have to take the studs out of the drum for it to clear.  If I don't use
the bottle jack I cannot get the wheel off.

Denis:  63 was first year for the "flared" fender wells on the rear.  62s and
earlier had straight metal there and there is less clearance between fender
well and tire making it difficult to change the rear wheel with a larger tire.

Murray has 185 60 15s. I don’t know if that adds anything to the discussion.

Yes Sonne is a '60.  Um, I stole all of the running gear from my '66.  I know
my tranny is a freeway flyer and I do still have my gear reduction boxes.  As
for the size of nuts, being a girl I don't know big from small.

Sonne is a 60 model, right?  Early bus has no lip on the fender well and much
less space between fender and the brake drum than on the 64-67 busses.
Anything bigger than stock is not easy to get in there.  It's possible to go
slightly bigger than stock 6:40X15 but it isn't easy to mount the wheel on the
brake drum. Just not enough clearance with the fender.  And if you have a big
nut tranny in it the brake drums are a bit wider than the original small nut
tranny and that also uses up space.  And I do hope you are going to run a big
nut tranny cause you are going to take forever to get to Shasta if running the
gear ratios in the small nut.

Yes Sonne is the DC.  But I know someone who is on this list that has Grabbers
on his Bus and he does not remember having trouble getting them on and Shasta
guys use them and they all have Splits.

Which bus is Sonne.  If the DC, yep, you have trouble fitting tires much larger
than stock under the fender wells of a split bus.  Something you have to
consider; unless of course you wish to cut out the fender wells, in which case
you will be banned permanently from all things splitty.

Subject: [tcb] BFGs vs. Grabbers

I have been looking into buying the tires for Sonne.  Some Shasta guys say
Grabbers and some say BFGs. I have Grabbers on Wieder (zebra) and love them!
The BFGs are smaller than the Grabbers but have better load rating. BFGs D-8
ply and Grabbers C-6 ply. I love how the Grabbers look and fear the BFGs won't
look as tough.  Grabbers 27/8.50R14 (216/76R14) BFGs 195/74/R14 (195/75R14)
BFGs are 1.41" smaller in diameter/.83" smaller in width/4.43" smaller in
circumference/.71" shorter in sidewall height.  Currently my Grabbers (borrowed
from Wieder) are not fitting in on the rear of Sonne. My metal guy blames the
WW metal pieces being off, I am not so sure of that.  So maybe BFGs will fit
without re-doing the metal work.  Grabbers are cheaper and I imagine will look
tougher being that they are larger and will give Sonne more clearance. I am
thinking of staying with Grabbers.  What do you guys think?
