Brian, I did not mean to insult you or hurt your feelings. I don't think that you are stupid, or anything like that. I guess what I was trying to say was illustrated by your statement that you "Drive the bus until it breaks and then fix it".( I am sorry if that is not exactly what you said, I lost the original e-mail ) I would rather go through my bus, stem to stern before I would put it on the road, brakes, suspension, electrical, etc. The bus is going to break, no matter what any of us do, but a complete work up on a new bus, front to back, would give you a safer, more reliable vehicle. and certainly reduce surprises.

I repeat; the bus is going to break, no matter what. Last night I completed replacing the gaskets on my tranny leak and when I was all done... the other side started leaking just as badly. Why? Who the #%!*^ knows! It's a VW!

About your oil leak, When my first engine, for which I had paid $2,200 (the last major repair I have ever, or will ever paid for) threw a rod, it made a tiny crack at the top of my case, right at the rear edge of the fan shroud. It caused a fine oil mist to completely fill the entire engine compartment. It drove me nuts before I found it and fixed it. Anyway, some people had the same theory that the leak was at the crank pulley and so I installed a sand seal. It did not work in my instance, but it might in yours, if that is where your oil leak is. It is an easy install.
