Jack up the front end till wheels are off the ground. Grab tire at 3 o'clock and 9 o'clock and push one side and pull the other, if you feel looseness it's probably a tie rod. Have someone look at the tie rod ends when you do this and you can see the play if it's the tie rod. Now grab the tire at 12 o'clock and 6 o'clock and push and pull opposite, if you feel slack and hear clunks it's probably a ball joint. Have someone look at the ball joints when you do this and if they are worn you can see the slack when rocking the tire top and bottom. Generally playing with the front end and trying to induce play while the wheels are suspended will diagnose front end wear. --- On Sun, 9/20/09, w.wood <evil.scientist.boo@xxxxxxxxx> wrote: From: w.wood <evil.scientist.boo@xxxxxxxxx> Subject: [tcb] Re: Any Steering Box guru's out there (early Bay) 1971 To: tcb@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Date: Sunday, September 20, 2009, 9:51 PM Could be a ball joint or a tie rod end. I move the steering wheel side to side and hear this one clunk sound. This is stationary not moving but I do hear the sound when I pull into my driveway turning the steering wheel , Again one clunk and then it's gone. I did change the drag link a few months ago and I can see that the swing arm is not moving up and down at all when I turn the wheel back and forth . The steering box is dry on the outside( no sign of leaks) I am going to check the level in it in the morning. I will be at T@P with her and would welcome to have someone look at it. Or of you can point me to someone here in Houston that would be great. Trying to figure what it is so I can fix it.
