How would you do that Steve?

I think I remember seeing something in the main menu.

I will definitely give that a shot as I have an 8 gig memory card so, should
be good for having enough space.

Would doing that mean I could use the system without connecting, or having
to connect to the internet?

It would just be a useful thing as I have been in a couple of places where
there hasn't been a phone signal.

It is rare with Vodafone from my experience, but, it does happen.

Thanks again Steve for your help.

Hi Paul,

Yes, you can download the maps for the entire UK. Not sure how much space
it takes up, but you certainly can download as many maps as you want.

All the best

Steve

Hi Everyone

Great to hear some conversations about Wayfinder, thanks Graham for starting
them.

I agree that the POIs are a bit limited and Nokia maps does have far more at
the moment.

But Nokia maps although seeming to be quite comprehensive, is not accessible
as far as I can see and you have to pay a monthly or yearly subscription if
you want the "navigate to" feature.

Frankly, I have never seen such an accessible product of this nature as
Wayfinder is that works so well and on something as small as your phone.

I use the system for walking routes. I did get totally lost somewhere a
couple of months ago and was able to find my way back to a place I knew and
get home safely.

I walked on various bits of the Birmingham to Worcester canal last week and
Wayfinder knew where I was and had all the locks mapped in the Tardebigge
lock flight too! It is the longest flight of locks in the UK by the way! I
know, I sound like a saddo for knowing that! Anyway to continue.

I use Wayfinder on the bus so that I can see where the road name nearest my
bus stop is so that I don't miss it.

The downside is the lack of POIs but, I have got round this by going online
to find the postcode of the place I want to get to and sticking that in the
favourites and giving it the name of said place. This works just as well.

My wife drives and I have used Wayfinder Access very successfully to give
her directions as obviously, Wayfinder calls out "turn left", "turn right",
etc, but I can confirm to her what road it is that she needs to go down.

All in all, it's all good really and with the addition of more POIs in the
future and the existing abilities that Steve highlighted, (I have purchased
the European City Guide and it is fantastic), we really do have a good
product in my view and well worth its cost.

I am quite happy to try to answer questions if I can as to how best to use
the system given my totally self-taught knowledge!

The only questions I have are:

Does Wayfinder work with the assisted GPS feature on the Nokia phones that
have that feature, i.e. the N95 which I am using?

And:

Is there any way to download the Map say, of the UK so that you don't have
to always be connected to the mobile internet? For me, it isn't the cost of
the internet connection as that is minimal or irrelevant if you have a data
package but, Wayfinder won't work without said internet connection unlike
products like TomTom for example which do as they have the maps installed on
them.

Thanks again everyone.

Hi Graham,

Basically, none of the "specialist" GPS systems for the blind have decent
search capabilities. For example, I can enter a house number and post code
and be taken there. I can also find a POI and press the dial button and the
phone will ring it, without knowing the number. So if I go to a restaurant,
I can use it a bit like a yellow pages.

Finally, when I go to visit anyone a way away, I can instantly find out the
current weather conditions.

By the way, you can also add other services like city guides for London,
Manchester, Birmingham, etc. It is way ahead of the others in some ways.

All the best

Steve

steve, could you expand a little on this and say why? do you know of any
practical demos or anywhere I can check out a decent up to date review?

Cheers

Hi David,

I don't think so in this case. It is just what Nuance and Wayfinder call a
Summer Sizzler. I think it is just to get more people on the Wayfinder
bandwagon, and I applaud it. I think that in many ways, despite the
restrictions, Wayfinder Access is now the best out there.

All the best

Hi:

Discounts often indicate a better or cheaper product upcoming.

Steve - what is in the Wayfinder pipeline?

Hi Graham,

The only down side to waiting, is that you may lose out on the current
discount. The price is usually 260 pounds, but until the end of September,
there is a 20 ercent discount. You may as well take advantage if you can,
since you will get the upgrade for free no doubt.

All the best

Steve

Hi Sunil.

Thanks fror this. I will wait then I think before lashing out £200 or so on
this particular package and see what happens in the next release.

Cheers

Yes they are. The database is extremely disappointing in every category. I
bet if you stand outside the local tube and search for the nearest station
it won't show up. But over on the Wayfinder list the word is that there'll
be a significant improvement in the number of PoIs in the database in the
next release.

Hi all.

I live in Stepney Green east London and can find very few points of interest
around when trying out wayfinder. Am I doing something wrong? I seem to
find far less places than I did with even Nokia Maps, and TomTom I know
finds more too. All I get though is KFC and McDonalds. Are these points of
interest really so limited?

Regards

Graham
