I agree Amie. Now if you were a GDO in Australia, the Guide Dog Association would pay for one for you.----- Original Message ----- From: "Amie Slavin" <amie.slavin@xxxxxxxxxxxx>

At the moment ATW have just been given a new policy, not to fund sat' nav' access tech. This is, of course, a deal-breaker with access tech as expensive as it is. Call me cynical, but I do suspect some of these prices are only sustained by ATW's willingness to pay them. Once the cash-cow of ATW dries up, prices will have to be within the reach of those of us paying them. If I'm right then this may be another way in which we are heading in the right direction, might it not? -----Original Message----- From: talks-uk-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:talks-uk-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Graham Page Sent: 25 November 2010 13:56 To: talks-uk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [talks-uk] Re: When will Talks work with OVI Maps? Yes the premium we pay for gPS access is simply too much. Morally of course we should pay no more than anyone else. Everyone would agree with that in an ideal world so I can swallow the price of a product like a handheld GPS system being £200 or so rather than the £120 or so paid for by a sighted person but effective stand alone systems are still 5 times what a sighted person would pay and, though I understand the reasons why, this is a far from satisfactory situation. If you can cope with touch screens then the apple IPhone looks the most likely winner at the moment. Otherwise you are talking stand alone products which are still 5 times dearer than an equivalent that a sighted person may use. We are heading in the right direction though. I think Trekker cost about £1100 when it was first launched with the Pro version including a suite of programs called Maistro costing about £1300. So prices have dropped a bit but there is further to go in this area! So Ifone is doing well with gps as well as so much else? Sounds like Apple is on the verge of shaking up access tech altogether. Not before time, in my view; the sooner Apple make other developers get real about the acceptability of serially ripping off people with access needs, the better for us all. V interesting thread.
