Graham,

I think that 5 times is a little high now isn't it? The Trekker Breeze is under
the £600 mark, and a top of the line GPS for the sighted, which is a fair
comparator is £180 or so. making it about 3.5 times the price.

when you consider that Breeze may sell 1000 units or perhaps up to 3000 units
in total throughout its lifetime, where as the mainstream product may sell that
in a week or month worse case, it makes sense why we pay more.

its a harsh reality that we pay more owing to our disability, but that's the
way it is in any market where there's a small number of people wishing to buy
something.

take pianos verse electronic keyboards, or Azus laptops verse Sony VAIO, or
print replicers of fine art verse the originals, or sports cars verse family
cars. yes most of these are luxury items, but the market principals still apply.

Yes the premium we pay for gPS access is simply too much. Morally of course
we should pay no more than anyone else. Everyone would agree with that in
an ideal world so I can swallow the price of a product like a handheld GPS
system being £200 or so rather than the £120 or so paid for by a sighted
person but effective stand alone systems are still 5 times what a sighted
person would pay and, though I understand the reasons why, this is a far
from satisfactory situation. If you can cope with touch screens then the
apple IPhone looks the most likely winner at the moment. Otherwise you are
talking stand alone products which are still 5 times dearer than an
equivalent that a sighted person may use.

We are heading in the right direction though. I think Trekker cost about
£1100 when it was first launched with the Pro version including a suite of
programs called Maistro costing about £1300. So prices have dropped a bit
but there is further to go in this area!

So Ifone is doing well with gps as well as so much else?
Sounds like Apple is on the verge of shaking up access tech altogether. Not
before time, in my view; the sooner Apple make other developers get real
about the acceptability of serially ripping off people with access needs,
the better for us all.
V interesting thread. Thanks everyone

yep i agree but there needs to be something now i mean the iphone has free
or four diffrent accesssable apps allready for g p s so it is beating talks
hands down in that reguard and it is newer as well. talks do need to try and
catch up really as quick as possible or ells a lot of people are going to be
left with out a viyable option.
