I know my point is that 3 who launched in march 2003 got the 3g licence. The
other 4 networks had to upgrade there base stations so already had planning
permission.

Hi Mark.

That is incorrect. Unlike the other networks, Three has been built from the
ground upward to provide 3G coverage throughout the nation. Vodafone, 02,
orange and t-mobile have had to spend millions upgrading their network to
support new service. In point of fact, Three were the first network in the
UK to offer 3g internet serfing which meant services such as video calling
were possible. Even today, three don't use GSM to route calls, they use
UMTS which I understand is data based.

All the best, Ibrahim.

Actually 3 has the least 3g coverage mainly due to the fact that they are
about 14 years behind orange and even longer than tmobile vodafone and o2.

Oh yes, I was happy with Virgin Mobile until
March 2006 when I ported my number to 3, nothing
against Virgin I liked their service but wanted
the 3G services. Now I get good value Internet
and a good service from 3 instead which surely
has the biggest 3G network in the UK. Back on
topick, if you use much Internet on Virgin Mobile
it will cost you a bit, that is their money maker
as the last I knew it cost 0.5 pence per KB, that's just over £5 per MB.
