I presume this earlier version would be the one I use on an n86 and one of
the old ancient 66 80 handsets?

I downloaded Skype from Blindsea and installed it successfully. I've also
discovered what the problem was.
There are 2 Skype for Symbian versions I.a. S60.3.0 and S60.5.0 (or
something like that) and I had originally installed the 5.0 which didn't
work. I assume that that version is for the newer Symbian phones I.a. the
touchscreen etc.
Anyway, thanks Eleanor for suggesting Blindsea.
