Dear All,
Nuance have released the new latest version of Talks, available for immediate
download from TalkNav's FTP site, www.talknav.com, simply click on Nuance
Accessibility, Downloads, then click the link to connect to our FTP, and then
follow through.
Release notes below, you can also from our site purchase any upgrades to your
license that you may need, or indeed, transfer licenses that you may require if
you now wish to try out a new phone.
Nuance TALKS&ZOOMS Version 5.21
Release Notification
1. Introduction
We proudly announce the release of the Nuance Accessibility Suite - Nuance
TALKS and ZOOMS - Version 5.21 supporting Series 60 3rd Edition / 5th
Edition / Symbian^3 for August 11th, 2011.
Version 5.21 is a free upgrade for all Premium Edition licenses generated
after November 13th, 2007 (the release date of TALKS 3.50 for 3rd Edition).
In particular, this means that it can be installed by any customer who is
currently able to run version 4.11 or 5 without requiring a new license.
2. The new handsets
2.1. Changes to the list of supported phone models
The following handsets are newly supported (please see section 4 "Known
Issues" about some limitations):
Nokia C5-00 5MP
Nokia C5-03
Nokia C6-01
Nokia E6-00
Nokia E7-00
Nokia X5-01
We also assume the following phones to work without major problems. However
we have not got enough test results yet to definitely confirm this:
Nokia X7-00

3. What's New?
This section lists the improvements of TALKS&ZOOMS 5.21 compared to the
previous version (5.20).
3.1. New versions of Eloquence and Vocalizer
This update includes new versions of both Eloquence and Vocalizer packages
for all languages. Old versions of these voices can still be used, however
it is important not to mix different versions of Vocalizer on the same
phone, as this can lead to problems when switching to a Vocalizer voice.
. Eloquence 6.1.125: this version uses 16kHz audio output on all
phones. This both improves compatibility (for example making speech during a
call possible on Symbian^3 phones) and audio quality. In addition, this
version fixes crashes seen with the US English version packaged in the
previous TALKS releases.
There are now two installation packages available for US English, one called
Eloquence_enu_dct_6_1_125.sisx which contains an extended pronunciation
dictionary, and one called Eloquence_enu_6_1_125.sisx without the
dictionary, leading to somewhat higher speed and lower memory consumption.
. Vocalizer 5.42.1: this version includes the latest updates from
ongoing Vocalizer product development, with various improvements across
several languages as voices.
3.2. Other changes
This section lists further changes to TALKS that were made in this update:
Application support:
. The new web browser (version 7.3) introduced with the June 2011
firmware update for some phones, e.g. the E52, E72, C5-00 and E5-00, is now
supported. This also fixes access to e-mails that was lost for the same
reason on these phones.
. Some new items can be read on the Home screen, e.g. profile name,
Widget Catalogue or Microsoft Communicator entry.
. Internet Radio: volume keys are enabled by default also on touch
screens.
. Internet Radio: Added reading of Now Playing and Station Info
screens on 3rd Edition, plus some error popups.
. Symbian^3: [long Vol Down] now defaults to [Enter] in web browser,
to allow selecting bookmarks with side keys.
. Symbian^3: Added support for reading focus in "album cover" view.
. An embedded browser without a window title is announced as
"browser", to clarify situation e.g. when opening an e-mail body. This
indicates that [Talks],[Down] can be used to read the contents of the page,
if it is not otherwise accessible.
Touch screen improvements:
. Disabled use of [Camera] key to force "explore" mode. This feature
was introduced in version 5.20, but led to various incompatibilities, for
example by blocking the starting of the [Camera] application
. Symbian^3: rotated portrait [Talks] and browser keypads by 90
degrees, to better match softkey layout on screen.
. The symbol table of the virtual keypad is now being read. Note that
the symbol table can still cause the virtual keypad to become inaccessible
on some 5th Edition phones.
. Symbian^3: Text input into objects announced as "Fields" (e.g. time
or date) is now supported. Note that it is still not available on 5th
Edition models.
. Symbian^3: Virtual keyboard in Ovi Maps Search dialog is recognized
in the proper place on the screen.
. Added "Change reading of graphics" and "Read date and time" to top
row of virtual keyboard for [Talks] key.
. Multi-tap gestures are no longer blocked by TALKS.
Other changes:
. Symbian^3: speech on a call is now supported. As a result, the
Caller ID can be read, for example by pressing [TALKS],[Up] when call is
ringing.
. Disabled T9 dictionary in Manual Registration screen for easier
input of license.
. You can now press the second key in a TALKS shortcut, such as
[Talks],[5], together with the [Talks] key, rather than having to release
the [Talks] key first.
Bug fixes:
. Fixed cases where the virtual keyboard was not being detected in
certain situations (also affecting Daisy2go).
. Fixed rare application crash when long text is changing, e.g.
scrolling appointments in month view of E52 calendar.
. Fixed restart of Symbian^3 phones when using zoom gesture in
browser.
. Fixed recognition of focus in e-mail inbox in "portrait" mode.
. Fixed rare incidents where the following text was often being
suppressed after a particular menu item (the exact situation where this
happened depended very much on voice, speed, audio settings etc.).
. Fixed cases where task switcher on Symbian^3 phones was announced
when it was not in the foreground.
. Braille: partial fix to problems entering SMS messages using
Braille. The contents of the message and the number of remaining characters
are now updated when either [Space] or [Delete] are pressed, so adding and
deleting a space at the end of a message can be used to make sure the
message gets sent in full.
4. Known Issues with specific handsets and apps
. Nokia browser 7.3: opening drop-down lists by pressing [Select]
currently does not work reliably, due to a bug in the browser.
. In very rare cases, this version of TALKS may leave the audio
channel of the phone open until the next sentence is spoken, leading to
higher battery consumption and possibly conflicts with the SMS signal. This
is expected to happen only in very specific circumstances, and thus not
affect the majority of users.
. Nokia E7-00: the default [Talks] key on this phone is the [Menu] key
at the front of the device. This key will not behave correctly if it is
pressed twice too quickly, or if the touch screen is used within about a
second after pressing [Talks]. It is recommended to always wait a moment
after pressing the [Talks] key on this phone.
. Symbian^3: double-tapping on a scroll bar may lead to a restart of
the phone, especially if it is done quickly after opening a new window.
. Nokia C5-03: In the List view of the main menu, no cursor is
displayed when moving around with the side keys, so the focus is not spoken.
As a workaround, use either Grid view, or explore the screen to select menu
items.
. Touch phones: currently, there are some limitations to the use of
the on-screen keyboard for text entry. In particular, the menus for
switching to other keyboard layouts and for picking suggestions from the T9
dictionary are not fully accessible. Switching to other keyboard layouts is
not recommended, as some of them (e.g. mini-Qwerty or handwriting) are not
yet supported by TALKS, and can be difficult to exit.
. 5th Edition only: On some phones opening the symbol table in the
on-screen keyboard can lead to the keyboard stopping to take input until you
press [Exit] to go to the main menu, and then return to the application
where you were entering text.
. 5th Edition only: text entry into an object announced as "Fields"
(e.g. a date or a time) is not supported well by this version of TALKS, as
the virtual keyboard cannot be used with speech. This limits the use of the
Calendar and Clock applications that rely on these types of objects for date
and time input.
. Internet radio on 3rd Edition phones: long list items start
scrolling horizontally when they become focused, so TALKS will repeat their
contents partially a few times until they stop moving.
. N97: training mode will read the digits, rather than the letters,
for the keys in the top row of the QWERTY keyboard.
. E55: [Talks],[digit] shortcuts have been reported to not work
properly on this phone, most likely as a result of the unusual keyboard
layout.
. 3rd Edition (FP1 and FP2): the "Search" application is not
supported.
. 3rd Edition FP2: You will notice a slow response of voice
recognition "beep" after holding [Key 2] when TALKS is not muted
. E75: When using ZOOMS, moving around the screen by holding down the
cursor keys is currently not possible. The magnified portion of the screen
always follows the current focus position.
. N96: "Photos" application (and "Photos" submenu of "Gallery") is not
supported.
. N96 (prior to 20.x firmware), N91 and Nokia 5500: Daisy2Go not
support playback of audio books due to a missing MP3 codec.
5. FAQ
Q: Your software does not install on my E-Series handset or branded device,
and reports a Certificate Error! Why?
A: While TALKS&ZOOMS for Symbian itself is certified, and thus can be
installed on any supported handset, the installers for the TTS engines
(Eloquence or Vocalizer for Mobile) are not signed. E-Series handsets and
some branded devices only accept the installation of signed software, unless
you turn of the corresponding option inside the Application Manager:
. Open the phone menu.
. Open the App. Manager inside the Tools folder
. Press "Options", then select "Settings".
. Set "Software Installation" from "Signed only" to "All".
. Press "Back" to close the Settings dialogue, then "Exit" to close
the App. Manager.
. Now, you can install the TTS engine.
Another reason could be that the date on your phone is not set correctly -
as Symbian apps need to be digitally signed, SIS files can only be installed
if the phone is set to a valid date.
Q: Can I install the new release of TALKS&ZOOMS, while a previous release is
active?
A: Yes, if the new version is installed to the same memory location as the
previous release. If you would like to change the memory location, you have
to remove the previous release first!
Q: Why do I get an "Upgrade error" when installing the S60 3rd/5th Edition
version?
A: The most likely reasons are that you have used a beta release, or already
have the Nokia TTS driver available that was installed as a separate file
with version 3.10. Please remove any beta version, as well as the Nokia TTS
driver or the Nuance Speech2Go Reader application, before upgrading to TALKS
5.21.
Q: Why do I get an "Invalid serial number" error when trying to activate a
demo version of TALKS, even though I have entered the code correctly and
never used TALKS on this phone before?
A: The most likely reason is that TALKS thinks the demo has already
"expired" because the date on the phone is set incorrectly, usually to some
date in the future.
Q: Why do the side keys on my touch screen phone no longer move the cursor
after upgrading to the latest version of TALKS?
A: Some keyboard functions, such as [Talks],[digit] shortcuts on the Idle
screen and the use of the side keys to navigate through menus on 5th
Edition, are only supported after the phone has been rebooted once after
installing or re-enabling TALKS.
