I could not open them anyway  so had to start again and remove the right
protect and then they were fine.

I don't.  But, given that they would probably be "read only", Talks might
not cope with them as you need the edit mode and I'm guessing you wouldn't
have that if something was, as I say, "Read only".  
 
Someone with more knowledge may have more answers.

I cannot open right protect files though they are word files and had to
unprotect them first.  Does anyone know if it is possible to open such files
with Quick Word on the mobile phone and if so how it might be done?
