I now expect Vodafone to provide my handset swap as I've done it with them
so often.

I'm quite capable of pointing out them the numerous advantages of them doing
so if I have to and that I can do the same with any other network.

No need to repeat them as Graham has done such a goof job.

Thanks.

Paul

Hi Amie.

What do you think this list is for? it is surely about asking for help
about talks if you need it and of course that help is as important when you
are buying a phone or trying to choose one. As it is when you have the phone
itself.

Vodafone say you need to buy the phone from them but I managed to get Voda
to credit my account anyway with the cost of talks separately though they
were not that happy about it.

For providers to say they gain nothing from providing you with an accessible
phone is complete rubbish. If you have an accessible phone you can send and
receive texts, use the web and use email. If you have an IPhone then you
can use the various accessible IPhone aps available and all this makes the
provider money.

If you get TALKS through one of the dealers then it may be worth ringing
Voda and asking them to provide you with the cost of the upgrade. It really
is worth their while.

Regards

Graham

HI Neil

Yes, it really does. Next time I'm looking I'll definitely come to you,
even though I hope to be able to go to Ifone next time. I really wish I had
known I could come to you or Steve when I was buying. Stupidly, figured
that I had no business asking questions on a list like this one until I
actually owned a phone. My choice of buying from the Vodafone shop was
convenient, but ill-judged. It was a major purchase, in my terms, and I was
disappointed not to have a range of choices. You would have served me much
better, clearly.

Thanks again. I'll know next time.

A

Amy,

this is one of the problems with Vodafone and other Telco's offering Talks
Standard, they act to serve their common interest and not yours.

Vodafone view Talks installations as something they do for you, something
which costs them money and makes them nothing in return.

They offer Talks on a limited selection of phones, this being caused by a
few things, firstly they do not want to offer it on handsets which perhaps
they do not make as much margin on, but key, Nuance deliberately keep the
Talks Standard version a few notches behind the Talks Premium one, meaning
that Talks Standard will not support the latest range of phones on offer
from Nokia.

Another big problem with Vodafone and other Telco's is that their staff are
often ill informed and therefore bad at advising you what you may find will
work for you etc.

This is where dealers such as us and Steve Nutt etc can really help, we
understand the market, know our phones and our users, we can advise based on
the latest range of phones which are supported by Talks Premium and actually
have a desire to help.

hope that this helps.

When I went to buy my phone, by simply walking into the Vodafone shop, they
could only offer me one phone, they said, which could run Talks. I've taken
that, by reading this list, to mean that I was offered the only Simbion
phone they had in stock. It seemed that was my only choice.

I know I could, in a fantasy, have simply gone for Ifone and Voiceover, but
could I have bought something between the two, and run Talks, please?

I'm happy with my phone, except that it was a recon', and I'm concerned that
it might not have a great life span. It doesn't do wifi, but I don't much
mind; only really want a phone, and to play books and music. Sat' nav'
would be great, but not essential. So, I'm not that bothered, but it would
have been nice to actually choose a phone, rather than only have one option.

Neil, agreed, but Maps is certainly better than the nothing we were going to

Amy,

Wayfinder Access offered full point to point navigation, an around you look
mode, a nearby mode, the ability to do other GPS functions using the speech
software on your phone.

with OVI you can do point to point, but you cannot learn about what is
around you as you travel using nearby or around you views.

I would say that where 100% represented a perfect GPS solution for the
blind, something like Sendero GPS or Mobile Geo represents say a 90%
solution, maybe more. whereas Wayfinder Access was say 40% there, with OVI
and speech services from Nuance or Code Factory being only 20 - 25% there.

those around you or nearby views gave a person a lot of info and were
essential to public transport usage.

Andy,

OVI Maps is not an alternative to Access in terms of a truly accessible GPS
program, it is though a workable solution to an extent.

the issue behind whether or not you'll have to pay for voice guidance is
dependant on phone model and version of FW that you are running on that
phone.

thanks.

Hi all

I understand that I can use OVI maps as a gps solution to Access, on my N82,
but have also discovered that there is a charge from Nokia to use the speech
component of the software, so will Ovi maps work just with TALKS, as in
pedestrian mode under Access, or will I need to pay for the Nokia voicing
service? -
