and that is why we left vodafone two years ago. I have never come across such
an inefficiently frustrating company before. I would give them the time of day.

Very interesting Hussein. My negotiating skills with Vodafone and they tell me
one thing and do another!!! I am under the impression I am on a 28 day rolling
contract and I am informed by another that I am on an 18 month contract so
there you are!

  Hi Eleanor,

Not to split hairs, but you had the right of it. I did get the iPhone on a
trial, and it was never my intention to keep it due to the high price - I would
have sourced one from elsewhere if I was to buy it outright.

The tariff hunting I did was out of interest. Had I kept the iPhone, I would
have immediately had it unlocked, hence my needing to know what tariffs are out
there. As for my friend, well he seems to be iPhone crazy so it was a question
of helping him out. I didn't actually have any input during the call as a
silent listener, but just overheard what was being said.

It's not so much a question of negotiating skill than attitude. Or at least
that's what I find anyway. The market is built on trade. If everyone stuck to
their guns, no-one would get anywhere very fast. Yes, the underlying principles
of supply and demand would still be implemented, but we would not have the same
levels of competition and competitive advantage upon which most if not all
firms are built that we do have today.

As for my having a good deal, well, I do believe everyone has the choice of
either sticking with what they have or taking a step further to try to better
it. So I don't see myself as having any distinct advantage over the masses, so
to speak 'smile'. I just like to go through life questioning everything and
never being satisfied with what 'just is'. Maybe that's overly pedantic and
inflexible of me, but I've never been one to just go with the flow.

At the end of the day, I'm just out to get the best for my money that I can.
If I can help others do the same where it's wanted, then that's great for both
sides. I get no financial gain from it, just the satisfaction of knowing I've
been of some use to someone who'll hopefully end up better off as a result.

But back to regular programming, I think.

I have to agree with you Steve, I was absolutely sure (though held back on
saying it as I began to think I must have been imagining it), that Hussein had
told us on list that he was having an iPhone on trial and then that he said he
would not be getting one. Oh well it is his privilege to change his mind. I
was also interested in his negotiating skills as he obviously must be very
persuasive and his friend too (when he was the silent listner) as it is
practically impossible to shift these large corporations. Certainly £15 per
month for what he has sound brilliant but I take comfort in the fact that he is
for sure in the minority and I am paying the High Street rates for my contract
along with millions more!

Hi Hussain, well I talked to all the companies who do the iPhone and have
shops in my city...02, Vodafone, Orange, T Mobile, 3, Tesco and Virgin. T
Mobile and Virgin said they don't do the iPhone and the others had exactly the
same tarrif, apart from Tesco who had a 12 month contract at £20 per month, but
£340 for the handset. When I say exactly, I mean exactly and I did try to
bargain, but were told by all of them Apple set their own tarrifs. This maybe
a tactic on their part, but I had absolutely no bargaining power, as I couldn't
say I could get a better deal elsewhere, because I couldn't. Paying £340 at
Tesco wasn't an option and paying £40+ wasn't either, so I went for a £35/24
month contract, which I'm very happy with, as the iPhone is an amazing piece of
equipment and I wouldn't be able to get 1 otherwise...I just carried on paying
the same as I did for my N85. BTW, didn't you say a few weeks ago Hussain that
you sent your iPhone back as you didn't like the way it's locked down? Sorry
if this wasn't you, but it's just ringing a bell, cheers Steve.

      Hi Steve,

Where did you hear that Apple set the tariffs? Sorry, but this just
isn't true when you start talking to the networks, at least with T-Mobile and
O2, the first I know from personal experience and the latter from being a
silent party to a conference call when the deal was set up.

Apple may set tariffs, but that does not mean that networks stick by them.

So, my advice is to negotiate with the network, especially if you have a
competitive offer or are doing a contract renewal.

Hi Jim. Apple set their own tarrifs, so it doesn't matter where you go,
all the deals are the same. I've had my iPhone for a few weeks now and as far
as I can remember (don't quote me), you're looking at around £30 per month=300
minutes/300texts/1gig of data transfer and you'll have to pay approx £129 for
the handset on 18 month contract. £35=600 minutes/unlimited texts/1gig of data
transfer and you'll pay approx £87 for the handset on 24 month contract. Best
thing to do is have a look on the web and you'll get the full picture, cheers
Steve.

        Hi,

Apologies for the off topic message, but not sure where else I could
ask this question.

I'm thinking of getting an Iphone and I'm wondering what the best cim
is out there, with free calls over all networks, text messages and unlimited
broadband connection. Would I have to go contract with a cim only card that
would achieve the above or could I go pay as you go? If i have to go contract,
who is giving the best deals.

If you feel this is off topic, maybe you could answer the questions off
list at:

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

        Jim
