Hi Paul.

Hmmm, I suggest you give it another go, this time using the driving mode when on a bus. I'm guessing the refresh rate of the GPS is lowered when walking as its assumed that people aren't going to walk at speeds in excess of 10 miles per hour *smile*. Also, try using the phone's internal gps, I think you'll be surprised at how good it is once it has a fix.

All the best, Ibrahim.

I also wonder if it was because I was in walking mode on OVI while
travelling on the bus? Maybe they allow for slower speeds In walking mode.

It was quite a way out I have to say.

Gonnaa give it another go anyway but, access is still very much an issue for
me with very little sight.

Like I think you said... They could build it in relatively easily.

I'm guessing the conversion behind the maps to some kind of text which a
screen reader could read would be the difficult bit? Not sure how all that
works.

Cheers.

Paul

Hi Paul.

Well, if my experience is anything to go by, I used my N97 which has both
assisted and hardware GPS and I found Ovi incredibly accurate considering.
Wayfinder was never as accurate as Ovi even when an external receiver
was used and the built in GPS didn't place too much demand on my battery. I was using the product in navigation mode for over an hour and my battery was
still at 7 bars when I was done. I think a lot of people don't like the
internal gps receivers because the N82 was famous for draining the battery
whenever you wanted to use it, but that is the case no longer.

All the best, Ibrahim.

I used an external GPS receiver and found OVI quite inaccurate. I need to
give it another go I guess and I will. But, I have the keychain receiver
that Talknav sell, or, were selling so, shouldn't be a problem there. I'm
reluctant to switch to internal GPS receiver and AGPS cause of battery
life
on my phone.

Using the N86 for reference by the way.

Thanks.

Hi Steve.

All thingz considered, as you say, its not adiquit enough of a replacement
for the totally blind traveller however it is nearly there. If the home
screen were made usable, we could get more information about what street
we
were on or where we were in both driving and walking navigation modes,
this
product could easily outshine wayfinder though, its just a matter of
putting
in the effort by the powers that be.

All the best, Ibrahim.

Hi Ibrahim,

I think we should be realistic here though, it is not really a solution
for
the blind in its current state.

Hi Steve.

Well, I was able to use Maps on a route from my home to the local chemist
yesterday, however I get your point to a degree because you have to
memorise

which icon and sub icon you need. For instance to walk a route, you need
to

press the right arrow once, enter once then right arrow once to set
destination and this all from the home screen while avoiding touching the
touchscreen on N series devices. You could easily become disoriented if
you'll pardon the pun *smile*.

All the best, Ibrahim.

Hi Scott,

This is entirely my point. Saqib is coming at this from a low vision
user's
point of view, which is entirely different to that of a total.

I still maintain that maps is pretty unusable if you have no sight.

All the best

Steve

Thanks to sack for the pod cast on this.

I have to say though the mane thing I noted from it is that non of the
things he went to on screen talked either before he prest on it or after
so
how can a blind person use it?

From listening to this I don't think I could.

 Ta Scott.

Oh well Steve, Neil is holding up a flame of hope tonight re WFA. Maybe
the
Ovi Maps will not be necessary after all. that would be brill if Neil
does
come up with something. Are you involved in these Talks, too, if you
will
pardon the pun, on the Talks list *smile*.

Hi Eleanor,

I don't believe it. The icons don't talk, but even pressing on them
gets
nothing, so Hussein, care to elaborate? I guess you have some useful
vision
too.

Hi,

I can confirm this. I commandeered an N86 today and even though I did
not
use it for long, Sahib's description made sense to me when I had the
thing
in front of me.

Hi Steve.

Go to www.nokia.com/maps and download the 3.03 release of maps. Its not
available through the SW update feature on that phone, so you have to
download it manually. Install it and you'll be able to use the software
as
per the instructions Saqib has provided.

All the best, Ibrahim.

Hi Saqib,

This description is no help at all if you have an N86, since the
submenus
are not being read out.

It looks to me as if maps is completely inaccessible on the N86.

The only bit that is accessible is when you press options, you get
Account,
Settings and Support. That is all I can get anyway.

Thanks for a great effort, but it looks as though this won't work on
some
of
the newer phones.

All the best

Steve

Nokia Ovi Maps 3.3 main menu description.

This description is for the new Nokia Maps 3.3 main menu interface.

Usually when you open the application you are greted with the main menu
which consists of 10 icons. There are two rows of 4 icons which are
displayed on the screen and a further 2 which can be seen at the bottom
left
of the screen. The display almost looks like a 4-4-2 formation. For
those
who follow football will know what I'm relating to.

When you first open the Ovi Maps 3.3 app the drive icon is highlighted.
The
drive icon is located on the left of the screen, second one down from
the
top left icon. If you select this drive icon you will be presented with
a
further 3 icons. The highlighter will be on the first of the 3 icons
presented which is on the left of the other two icons. The first icon is called drive home in this submenu. Selecting this will prompt the app to
start navigation to your home location.

The second icon in this sub menu is called Set Destination. Pressing
select
on this will bring up a accessible menu where you can select an option
of
your choice. These choices consist of History, Favourites, Search and
finally From Map. The From Map is the 4th option.

The third and final icon from this Drive submenu is called Map. If you
select this you will be shown a Map view of your current location. From
this
Map you can press select and you will then be presented with a
accessible
menu. The first of these options is Show Details. This will give you
further
information in text so You will know exactly where you are currently
standing. For example a name of the road and the number of the property
in
which you may be standing by. Second option is Share location. Third
option
is Save Place. 4th option is Send. I have now covered the drive section
of
Ovi Maps 3.3.

My Position Icon

From the main icon screen remember when I pointed out that the
highlighter
is stationed on the Drive icon in which I have described in detail
above.
Above this icon is the My position icon which is situated on the top
left
of
the screen. It's the first icon in the first row of icons. To get to
this
you just arrow up once from the Drive icon. With in this map view you
can
hit select to bring up an accessible menu. These consist of Show
Details,Share Location, Save Place and the final option in the list is
Send.

Find Places

The Find Places icon is the second icon in from the top left next to the
My
Position Icon. Pressing select on this will bring up a search box. Once
you
type in your search you should be presented with a result of your
search.

Share Location

The Share Location Icon is the third icon in the top ro after the Find
Places icon. You will have to create a Nokia account to take advantage
of
this feature.

Favourites

The Favourites Icon is the 4th and last icon in the top row. This is on
the
right of the Share Location icon. Pressing select on this will bring up
the
Favourites menu. The options here are Sincronise with Ovi, Places, Routs
and
Create New Collection.

Second row of 4 icons description

The First option in this row of icons is the Drive option. I have
covered
this earlier on in this document.

Walk

The Walk option resides next door to the Drive icon. Selecting this
option
will bring up a submenu of three icons. The first icon is Walk Home.
This
will trigger the navigation mode and you will be ready to outtake your
journey on foot. Icon 2 is the Set Destination option. From heare you
can
select an address from a previous history or favourites. There are also
options to search or select from map. As the map it self is inaccessible
I
think this option is not applicable for the VI user. The final option in
the
Walk submenu is help. Sadly this is also inaccessible.

Weather

The Weather icon is the third icon in the second row and this is
inaccessible.

Events

The Events Icon is the final icon in the second row of four. This
feature
is
also inacfcessible.

Third row of 2 icons

The third row which is the bottom row has two icons. Both are
inaccessible.
The first is called Loanly Plannet and the neighbouring icon is called
Michelin.

I hope this description is a help to those who are using the
application.
