thanks for this.  I hate the way phones are heading towards qwerty and going 
away from number pads.  the keys are just too small!

Hi Graham. There is a onscreen number pad and there is one on the keypad.
The top row of querty keys double up as  numbers. You have to press FN key
then one of those keys to display a number when writing a text message. If
you are going to dial a number then you don't need to press the FN key.
