i've just had a look together with a sighted person to confirm this.... and
it souns like you hav activated the hand writing mode.
Looking at this on my N97 classic this is activated as follows
1. When you are in a message and hav the touch keypad up there is a item called
change keyboard up near the top left of the screen which talks reads when
touched.
2. Pressing this change keyboard button then produces a option to choose
between handwriting or alpha numeric keyboard - this is not read by talks so i
can only assume you hav managed to trigger it somehow.
When this handwriting keyboard is up, to get rid of it do the following -
1. Press key2 for vack
2. Then after doing that the change keyboard button appears above it
3. Press this change keyboard button which is now located directly above key2.
You should now hav the numeric keypad back and if you leave with that as last
used it should always be the one which comes up.

One thing frustrating me when I go to write a text message is a screen coming
up which would appear to relate to someone hand-writing within a large text
box. The letter or word written then appears in type form further up the
screen on what looks like lined writing paper. The symbols are on the right of
the screen in the area of this hand-writing pad. Is there any way I can get
rid of this hand-writing pad and ensure that the text screen with alphabet or
numeric pad comes up instead. I find if I keep tapping arouond I can bring up
these screens but I do not actually know what I am tapping to achieve this so
am hoping that someone knows and can inform me correctly. I appreciate that
many users of N97 and N97 Mini may be using the physical keyboard. I can use
this OK but I want to learn the touch screen. Trouble is when i try asking a
sighted person, rather than explain to me what is going on they tend to just
find the screen I want and when I ask them what they did, they say somethng
like 'oh I forget, I just did' and do not appear to be able to articulate just
what they did.
