Hi Guys This is kind of verging on opinionated rants about play now! Let's not argue on this people - the OP asked a question and some of us suggested retailers to review for purchasing from and that is now done, right? Play.com are based in Jersey which I believe is not part of the UK which is why they are not liable for VAT/Duties.... They do however occasionally prepay the duties on small value purchases as a gesture of good will and trust me - they do not have to do this. They suggest a value of £18 for guidance and anything over this is purchased on the risk that duties/vat are payable (although because of their kindness it isn't always the case but don't rely on this) A lot of electronics and mobile phones for example are not liable for customs duty but could be liable for vat because from Play.com (or anyone in Jersey etc such as one of the partners amazon works with for music cd's comes from Jersey) goods would be entering into the UK (Which is different from the British Isles) So basically.... Play are being generous in pre-paying taxes if anyone has received an item from them over £18 and not been charged by Royal Mail for taxes because play do not have to do this, but be careful because items over £18 are liable for the extra charges and you could end up with a note from Mr or Mrs Posty saying you have to pay before we can release blah blah blah (plus they would levee a fee for the processing pleasure too!) Here's a bit from the play.com T&C's - If your delivery address is outside of Jersey, you may be subject to import duties and taxes, which are levied once a shipment reaches your country. Any such additional charges for customs clearance must be borne by you. You should note that customs policies vary widely from country to country; Play.com advises each customer to contact their local customs office for further information. Please note that when shipping products internationally, you should be aware that cross-border shipments are subject to opening and inspection by customs authorities. So on a final thought (Much like Jerry Springer) - play are great and helpful but for expensive items always check if the item can be purchased within the UK at the same price just to be on the safe side. And yes my job is arranging import freight which is partly why I know this but also because I am cautious when I first purchase from a company so I remember this from when play first started up (or you can just call me sad too - I'm not bothered!) Hope this clears up any confusion and we can now enjoy a big group hug?? :-) come on Darren you know you want to join in the hug too mate <Big squeezey hug for all> oh and <Big happy smiles> :-) or :) depending on your preference he he he Cheers Pete -original message- Subject: [talks-uk] Re: N86 From: "Darren Harris" <darren_g_harris@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx> Date: 21/11/2009 1:00 pm Right. But if it was based on the mainland it wouldn't be operating that way which is really the point. Because it's in jourzey which is a tax haven it can opperate in that way. I'm not sure if you still can but people would set up high interest bank accounts in jourzey because it used to be a legal tax dodge. -----Original Message----- From: talks-uk-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:talks-uk-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Ibrahim Gucukoglu Sent: 21 November 2009 12:54 To: talks-uk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [talks-uk] Re: N86 Hi. No, the reason that Play is so popular with punters is its what you see is what you pay pricing policy, its fast turnaround, free delivery, excellent customer service by phone and email, the easy to navigate website, wide range of product etc etc. All the best, Ibrahim. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Darren Harris" <darren_g_harris@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx> To: <talks-uk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Saturday, November 21, 2009 12:52 PM Subject: [talks-uk] Re: N86 Well right exactly. I didn't think it was right. 1 of the biggest selling points of play is the fact that it's VAT exempted because of where it is. -----Original Message----- From: talks-uk-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:talks-uk-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Ibrahim Gucukoglu Sent: 21 November 2009 09:05 To: talks-uk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [talks-uk] Re: N86 Hi. You won't be charged any extra for purchasing items over the £18 mark. Play is responsible for purchasing the items and paying taxes, the prices you see on the website will be the prices you pay. I've purchased phones and other things costing well over £18 in the past and have never experienced a problem. Considering play are the second-most popular retailer in the UK, I would think that they know how to operate a sound business and inform customers of any changes to tax and customs regulations. All the best, Ibrahim. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Darren Harris" <darren_g_harris@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx> To: <talks-uk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Friday, November 20, 2009 8:36 PM Subject: [talks-uk] Re: N86 That's interesting because it's still part of British territory so I don't really understand why you'd be charged for customs duty if it's in UK territory. -----Original Message----- From: talks-uk-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:talks-uk-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of DurDevil Sent: 20 November 2009 18:26 To: talks-uk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [talks-uk] Re: N86 hi Darren, yes they are based there so anything over about £18-20 purchased from there is technically a import and so is liable for customs duties. Anything massively over this cost and you could end up with a shock due to extra costs. Fine for dvds and cds or anything cheap though. Hope this helps. Be careful with play as if the item is expensive you could pay customs duty because they are overseas -original message- Subject: [talks-uk] Re: N86 From: "Ibrahim Gucukoglu" <ibrahim_gucukoglu@xxxxxxxx> Date: 20/11/2009 4:28 pm Hi. Try play.com which offer free delivery or expansis if you need it next day. Those are the two websites I mainly use for mobiles and accessories.
