Interesting now Ibrahim. When I got my Vodafone N95 I asked the chap how long
I would have to wait until I could unlock it and he said one year and then he
said it will cost you £20.00. All that said he then said he would do it for me
immediately and he did!!! No it is not a trick or joke, I have used other SIMs
in it, even 02 in Ireland! Now is my phone still Branded with Vodafone?

  Hi Carol.

OK, lets clarify this for you *grin*. When you buy a branded phone, the
phone network puts their own version of the symbian operating system on it,
customised with their specific feature set. When you go to upgrade the phone
using the nokia software updater, the service code which is the unique code of
the service provider and which determines amongst other things country, model
and colour is sent along with the IMEI number to the Nokia server when the
update check is performed. Nokia will then check to see whether an update for
that specific service code can be found, if it can, you'll be offered the
option of installing it. Because of the partnership with network operators,
they will get to decide whether you can apply the latest version of the
firmware. Just because Nokia have released an update, if the network haven't
endorsed it or had their own custom version made, they won't make it available
to their branded phones for obvious reasons. If you want the very latest
firmware and this direct from Nokia, you'll have to have the phone unbranded
which effectively is changing the service code to a Nokia unbranded one. This
can be done by a local phone dealer who may offer this service, there are also
a number of internet specialists to whom you can send the phone also. You
can't do this yourself at home, the process is very difficult for a blind
person to do as the use of specialist software is required.

I hope this helps and if you need advice on how to go about having your phone
serviced, please let me know and I can provide you with some personal
recommendations.

  All the best, Ibrahim.

Well, let me just clarify. This phone was purchased at a Voda shop and I
use O2. You still reckon I should give an upgrade a go!

Where do I go to find one then?
