Precisely Barbara, that's putting a good perspective on it. If you can
afford it, buy it. If not, then unfortunate. And if you want it but can't
afford it, then very frustrating.

I think Jackie many people fall into the trap of believing these gadgets are

a necessity and therefore, life is unfair if they can't afford them. We
survived before TALKS etc. Granted it does make life easier and aid our
independence, but that does not make it a necessity.

Not sure who made the argument about a blind couple having to go without
assistive products because they have to put the kids and their needs first.
Well, isn't that the same with sighted couples? Isn't that just being a
parent? Sighted parents have to go without things because of the kids, so
why should we be any different?

Like I say, it's falling into the trap of thinking these things are a
necessity and therefore a right which causes the problem. I love my TALKS,
JAWS, scanner etc and without them would find life difficult. But without
them I would not go hungry, I would still have shelter and water and all the

other basic necessities of life.

I couldn't have put that better myself Barbara. There are lots of people
out there with disabilities who expect everything for nothing, so a
reduction wouldn't necessarily be an incentive for them to purchase. I can
remember when the price of K-Reader was lowered, and people still complained
because they had already bought it, and didn't think it was fair the price
had been reduced.

I agree some assistive technology is expensive, and of course I wish it was
cheaper, but it isn't, so I have to make a decision whenever I want
something whether I need it, whether to save up to buy it, and whether that
price can justify the purchase. For many, smoking, alcohol, or drugs, is a
way of life they can justify, so you have to make your own judgment about
the merits of buying costly gadgetry that helps us in some way.

Kind regards,

J

This is an old argument isn't it? Personally I would buy it if it were
cheaper, but I am not demanding they bring the price down for many reasons,
most of which have been reiterated on this list numerous times. It's a
matter of judgement for each individual whether their use would justify the
price. If you don't like the price, don't buy it. If you think you will get
the use out of it, then save up or buy it on a credit card. And let's face
it, even if the price were lowered many blind people would still not buy it
as I am afraid many today still expect to be given things for free.

The money has to be in mass sales - there are hundreds and thousands of
visually impaired people and even people with other challenges making
printed material inaccessable. But pricing it like it is limits it to people

such as a business person who travels alot etc - that is not the big sales
area for this surely?

Hi Neil. I can understand you thinking that K-Reader is well worth the price
as you travel around alot independently and a tool of this nature is a great
assistance to your daily tasks and needs. For me £300 would be the thresh
hold before I would consider such a purchase. I'm constantly intouch with
sighted people through out the day so I wouldn't be eager to pay the £650
for the product when there are a set of eyes around to borrow most parts of
the day. Now I'm not suggesting for one minute that the price isn't right.
I'm just making the point that everyone has their own evaluation on the
product according to their circumstances. Someone else on this list may well
be in a position where sighted help isn't always an option and they would
gladly pay for the application. Perhaps I would if I was living alone.
