From my understanding the manufacturers have already agreed the format for
the cards before they 
exist, thus people like Nokia can build future proof devices.

That is how the N97 which came out within weeks of the N86 can both support
32Gb cards.

Hi, where did you see that? I read that the format of the 32 GB cards is 
completely new and readers will have to be constructed to take advantage of 
it. In other words they aren't backwards compatible. New card readers will 
be able to read older format cards, but older readers won't be able to read 
the new multi-layer format cards.

As far as I understand it, the N86 was rolled out too early for the card 
reader to be the right type for the next gen memory cards.
