I'm going to buy a scanner from them myself, I just keep forgetting to go
get it.
I have about half of a GPS navigation app written (requires you to buy MS
MapPoint to get the map data), but I never seem to have time to finish it.

with the barcode app, the app is free; you do have to buy a barcode
scanner,
and I think you have a wide variety of choice here from USB to Bluetooth
models. Some are very narrow focus (and much cheaper), and others cost
more, but you can just rotate the item in front of the scanner, and it
will
find the barcode automatically. when it has the barcode, it enters it
into
the app and sends it to the web site, which responds with all the info it
has. There's a company which sells assistive technology which specializes
in these barcode scanners, their name is A.T. guys.
If you had a netbook with a cell modem card, you could even take this into
a
store with you to help with shopping.
As for how you get the apps, your copy of window-eyes should have come
with
an app named "appGet" (which should be listed under the apps menu of the
window-eyes control panel). you can use this app (by pressing it's
hotkey)
to look at and download/install all other apps. Or, if you don't have
window-eyes, you can look at all the apps on their web page called "app
central" at:

Ok, this is great! So the bar code app is it the hardware part hook to
the PC with USB or is it Bluetooth to it or use the wireless internet
connection wifi to connect and send and receive info? How do you
search for apps for windows eyes. You have my attention now!

Well, no, they do both.
they started out with scripting for applications; but they also saw
that they had given programmers everything they needed to create
complete apps, and so they have been supporting that idea, and adding
whatever features were needed to make it happen.
So now, there are many apps: one is a free barcode scanning app, with
well over a million items in its web database (which the app talks to
when it scans something), and if it doesn't recognize what it scanned,
you can enter a description, and that is instantly available to all
other users of the app. This is obviously nothing to do with
scripting an application.
The value of window-eyes here is that it provides an interface to any
synthesizer, any braille display, which they support (so the app
developer doesn't have to), as well as providing a mechanism for
distributing and installing the apps, and providing a wealth of
programming support libraries.

Yes, new about the apps but I thought what they was calling apps was
scripting for application and this is different than an actual app (
application) that you would install on your device or computer?

well, that's fine then.
the only thing which may be unusual to learn is what all the apps will
do for you (everyone talks about apps for the I-phone, so you know
they're there, but not for screen readers). I think there are nearly
150 apps for window-eyes now. you can see them on the web site, or on
your pc using the applets app (which now shows you the rating and the
comments for each app).

Also if you are a jaws user and trying to make the change and have the
current version of Window-eyes, it now has Jaws quick key.
Press insert-j
then press any jaws hot key and window-eyes will tell you the
Window-eyes corresponding keys. Press insert-j again to dismiss the
Jaws quick key.
