Hi Barbara, well, you're right, some are better than others at routing, and generally they get better over the years. however, many people don't use them for routing, or not primarily for routing, but mostly to know where they are at the moment. in the case of the bus stops, it might be that you just need to know the stop is 200 yards almost straight ahead for instance; or you might just need to know when the bus reaches your particular stop.
