Something like it … but the idea with NFC is that you transfer information
directly from your Iphone to a merchants terminal, without going through any
internet or web service (it sounds like passbook is having to act as an
intermediate service). And of course, it handles financial transfers, and
other transfers. You can touch one Iphone to another to transfer songs,
business card info, etc. using NFC. It’s secure, no one can intercept the
communication, and it doesn’t go through any internet links routers or bridges
where it could be tampered with or delayed.

There are supposedly more than 200 thousand merchants who now have creditcard
machines with NFC technology already in place, ready for this means of payment.
Soda machines and other low-cost purchases are also supposedly ready to be
retro-fitted with NFC financial transfer hardware. However, it does require
new hardware; it cannot be done with existing phones or tablets which do not
have the NFC antenna.

Hello Chip and others interested in this thread:

What you are describing below sounds a lot like the new feature in IOS6
called PASSBOOK.

Your boarding passes, movie tickets, retail coupons, loyalty cards, and more
are now all in one place. With Passbook, you can scan your iPhone or iPod touch
to check in for a flight, get into a movie, and redeem a coupon. You can also
see when your coupons expire, where your concert seats are, and the balance
left on that all-important coffee bar card. Wake your iPhone or iPod touch, and
passes appear on your Lock screen at the appropriate time and place — like when
you reach the airport or walk into the store to redeem your gift card or
coupon. And if your gate changes after you’ve checked in for your flight,
Passbook will even alert you to make sure you’re not relaxing in the wrong
terminal.

Thanks Lynn.

Also, for anyone considering buying an I-phone, you may want to wait until the
I-phone five comes out (rumored to be announced in the next few weeks), as it
will have a new technology built-in (called near-field communications) which
allows the phone to be used as an electronic wallet or creditcard; just touch
it to a pay station and it instantly pays the coke machine, restaurant, etc.,
including the equivalent of showing your “library card” or “customer rewards
card” etc. I believe the Google Nexus and some other Android smart phones
already have this.

Hay look what IOS6 does for accessibility; VoiceOver, the revolutionary screen
reader for blind and low-vision users, is now integrated with Maps,
AssistiveTouch, and Zoom..
