The Summer Transition Program teens ROCK! Tallahassee Council of the Blind was honored to get to host a picnic for them today and everyone had a good time. Best of all, they weren't shy about interacting or eating!!! One of our members, Maryann Laird baked a cake with a Lighthouse, a sun and it said "Celebrating Lighthouse Summer Students 2009." What a nice time we all had. It doesn't surprise me for one minute that this good gang of kids donated part of their profit back to Lighthouse for younger kids! They'll go places! Also, one of the students, Melody's family was featured on Extreme Home Makeover earlier this year. In case you missed it, it will re-air this Sunday from 8:00 - 10:00 p.m. on ABC. Can you hear/see my smile and feel my high? What a nice day!
Take care, Sila

Ice Cream Fundraiser SUCCESS!
A huge THANK YOU to everyone who came out last night to Brusters
(7/22) and supported the Lighthouse Summer Transition Program teens
who served ice cream! They made $560, mostly from your tips. They are
going to have a great time in St. Augustine next week, and are even
donating $150 of the money they raised to the Early Intervention
program to help the children younger than themselves. WCTV and WTXL
covered the event, plus the Democrat came and is doing a more in depth
story on the program. Below is the blurb online at WCTV.

Thanks again, everyone! - Barbara

Visually Impaired Students Serve Up A Summer Treat

July is national ice cream month... and it's a perfect time to not
only eat the icy treat... but serve it too.

That's what several blind and visually impaired teens with the
Lighthouse of the Big Bend were doing Wednesday night. (7-22-09)

The students are raising money with the help of Bruster's Ice Cream shop.

They're saving up for a trip with the Lighthouse Summer Transition
Program which teaches them independent living and career skills...like
having a job in the food service industry.

"It also shows everyone in the world that Hey we may be visually
impaired, we may be blind but we can still do this," says Katelyn
Arrington, a visually impaired Lighthouse student.

The students do mock job interviews, a community service project and
learn about computer technologies.

Dear Barbara,

We didn't make arrangements in time for which we are very sorry, but the event was covered on the news last night--I don't recall what time but the
evening news--and it was covered on the early news this morning.

I hope you had lots of takers; the interviews were very well-done.

They all had their radio faces on. Smile.

Also if anyone can make it over to Bruster's on 1709 west Tharpe
Wednesday
the 22nd between 7 and 9 in the evening; the teen transition program will

be
serving up ice-cream. Some of their sales and all tips will go towards
the
teen's end of summer party.
