I went down to Klaymen Plaza today to get on board so to speak the new bus. I also talk with a couple of Star Metro PR people. Star Metro will be getting new buses in July to replace the year 94 buses. The buses being replaced have the wheelchair lift in the back and three steps at the front door. The Champion-built, 31-foot 'Hybrid Ride' diesel-electric bus seats 26 and comes equipped with two wheelchair positions and a wheelchair lift. When compared to a regular bus, the Hybrid Ride could potentially reduce particulate matter up to 90 percent and NOx emissions by up to 60 percent. In addition, the Hybrid Ride can improve fuel economy by 25 to 40 percent. "Hybrid Ride gives us the opportunity to show people just how green public transportation is while exposing them to the latest technology," said Bobby Westbrook, Transit Operations Administrator for the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT). The Hybrid Ride represents a partnership between FDOT and StarMetro in pursuing new and alternative technologies. In this FDOT funded demonstration project, StarMetro will operate and maintain the Hybrid Ride while providing quarterly reports on the vehicle's performance. This project data will then be shared with other transit agencies throughout the state and will ultimately assist those agencies in the decision making process as their administration pursues new technologies. "We are thrilled to be one of the first in the industry to demonstrate this innovative hybrid technology in a paratransit-like vehicle," said Ron Garrison, Executive Director of StarMetro. "Through the Florida Department of Transportation, and at no cost to StarMetro, we will be able to test this new technology in transit operations to assess reliability, fuel savings, reduced emissions and to enhance the maintenance divisions' skill level with hybrid vehicles. Undertaking this project will propel StarMetro, the state of Florida and the transit industry into new, green areas of research and innovation, which is why we take every opportunity to participate in new projects" For more information, please contact StarMetro at 891-5200 or visit Talgov.com/starmetro.
