City of Tallahassee Utilities Launches Neighborhood REACH - An
Energy-Efficiency Assistance Program
      December 13, 2010
Income-Based Program Helps Customers Save Energy, Water and Money - Your
Own Utilities launched Neighborhood REACH in the Bond community Saturday. The
initiative is a new Energy Smart Plus (e+) program designed to help City of
Tallahassee utility customers save energy, water and money by providing free
home energy and water-saving improvements. Through the two-year pilot program,
participating residents in Bond and other selected income-based neighborhoods
will receive in-home energy assessments, energy-efficiency measures, hands-on
education and energy and water-saving items, such as Compact Fluorescent Lights
(CFLs), faucet aerators, new air filters and reduced-flow showerheads.

Beginning on Saxon Street today, several City departments are providing
additional services and neighborhood enhancements, as City-trained REACH
professionals visit the southern Bond neighborhood. Technicians are conducting
home energy audits and installing energy-efficiency items such as winterization
kits, heating and air-conditioning filters, water heater wraps, water-efficient
faucet aerators and showerheads, refrigerator thermostats, wall plate
thermometers and door sweeps. Subsequent work will take place in the northern
Bond area and is expected to begin in February 2011.

"The Neighborhood REACH program will have a real impact in our community
by helping families reduce their home energy use and save money," said
Tallahassee Mayor John Marks. "I commend our utilities staff for their
proactive approach in educating citizens on the smart grid initiative. These
outstanding community outreach efforts will help Tallahassee's residents
understand how the smart grid system will benefit them in the future."

More than 100 Bond area residents attended the official kickoff event for
the project at the Walker-Ford Community Center on Saturday, as City officials,
community leaders and area dignitaries discussed details about the REACH.

After completing the Bond area project, REACH teams will continue their
efforts in selected income-based neighborhoods to assist approximately 3,000
customers. Each phase will begin with a kickoff event, where residents can
schedule home energy assessments, learn about the program and related City
services and take advantage of other Energy Smart Plus (e+) incentives. In the
weeks following the kickoff, Neighborhood REACH teams will visit each home in
the neighborhood to provide the energy-saving improvements and related
services.
