Florida Disabled Outdoors Association Becomes Chapter of Disabled Sports USA

Tallahassee, FL, November 2012 – Florida Disabled Outdoors Association (FDOA)
is proud to announce that they are now a chapter of Disabled Sports USA.

Disabled Sports USA contacted FDOA staff in the spring of 2012 because they
were impressed by FDOA’s programs and outreach promoting wellness through
accessible inclusive recreation for all. Disabled Sports USA was interested in
the association becoming one of its chapters and representing Florida. The
FDOA reviewed the benefits and decided that applying to become a chapter of
Disabled Sports USA would provide many opportunities for their members. “FDOA
went through a rigorous screening process to ensure that we would be a good fit
and that we utilized the highest safety standards. The process was well worth
it for the benefits that FDOA members will receive,” stated Executive Director,
Laurie LoRe-Gussak.

Some of the benefits of membership include the opportunity for FDOA members to
be part of national programs such as Warfighter Sports, Ski Spectacular,
Adapt2Achieve development conferences, Ski Tour, Summerfest, and Youth
Development. Disabled Sports USA and other chapter members offer
opportunities for people with disabilities to get out and active in a wide
variety of sports. Now that FDOA is a chapter, more people who can benefit by
these opportunities will be invited to them and become empowered to attend. .
For example, FDOA members can attend events such as the Hartford Ski
Spectacular taking place in Breckenridge, Colorado. Members may also get
discounted subscriptions to Challenge Magazine. Other benefits include
potential for grant funding for FDOA programs, marketing opportunities, staff
training, and insurance opportunities. FDOA staff will be providing its members
with these opportunities on an on-going basis.

Please note information on the Disabled Sports USA Ski Spectacular is attached.
The deadline to register has been extended.

Florida Disabled Outdoors Association works to enrich lives through accessible
inclusive recreation for all. FDOA was formed in 1990 as a result of David
Jones experience utilizing recreation for his wellness efforts and his personal
development that him to get back to living after he was shot in a hunting
accident resulting in a serious head injury that left him with permanent
paralyses of his left leg, limiting mobility and no use of his left hand. In
the process of his rehabilitation, he became aware of the importance of
recreation for rehabilitation – not only to improve mobility, but to improve
mental well-being. The Florida Disabled Outdoors Association has grown since
that point to have multiple programs including, the Recreation Activity Program
for Adults with Disabilities, ALLOUT Adventure Program, Miracle Sports,
Community-Based Therapeutic Recreation for People with a Brain or Spinal Cord
Injury and SportsAbility.
