StarMetro and Public Works Begin Stage One of Sidewalk Project

In preparation for StarMetro's Nova2010 route decentralization plan,
which launches
on July 11, StarMetro, along with the City's Public Works Department,
began construction
this week on stage one of the sidewalk project. Construction on the
sidewalk project,
which consists of two stages, will total nearly $15 million.
Stage one of the sidewalk project includes the installation of 35
segments. These
35 segments represent ten miles of new sidewalks. For a complete list of
stage one
sidewalk segments, please visit Talgov.com.
"With the City Commission's approval to fast-track the sidewalk project,
construction
on stage one should take three to four months to complete," said Gabriel
Menendez,
the City's Public Works director. "We hope to have many of the segments
completed,
if not under construction, by the launch date of StarMetro's new
system."
In addition to the installation of new sidewalks, many intersections
along these
segments will receive upgrades that include curb cuts, pedestrian
signals, painted
crosswalks and audible signals.
"Today, only 74 percent of StarMetro's system has sidewalk coverage,"
said Ron Garrison,
executive director of StarMetro. "Once stage one construction is
complete, the StarMetro
system will have 94 percent sidewalk coverage."

Stage two construction of the sidewalk project should begin next
calendar year. Construction
for stage two will total nearly $6 million and will result in nearly
five miles of
additional sidewalk coverage.
