The following are some pointers to help you prepare for Test #3:

1. How are tracks and sectors organized on hard disks? What is zone bit 
recording? What is LBA?

2. What are the features of the EIDE standard in terms of devices supported 
and data transfer speeds, etc.? What are the limitations of this standard 
and what barriers have existed and removed over the years? (e.g., Hard 
drive space limitations)

3. Know how hard disks are formatted - different types of formatting, etc.

4. What are the logical structures of hard disks? MBR, partition table, etc.

5. What are the features of the SCSI subsystem? e.g., No. and type of 
devices supported, use of IDs, etc.

6. What is USB and Firewire? How are they different and how are they 
similar? What are the other ports used to connect peripherals? How are they 
different?

7. What is the benefit of using a surge suppressor? What other devices can 
be used to ensure the proper supply of power to computer systems?

8. What is voltage, resistance, etc? How are they measured? What are the 
symbols the represent the different components? (e.g.  capacitors, 
transistors, ground, etc.)

9. What are the different types of technicians? How do their roles differ? 
What are the essential components of a technician's toolkit?

10 Review different problems that affect PC video systems, printers, 
keyboards, etc.

11. What components make up the video system? What features distinguish one 
monitor from another?

12. Know the fundamental troubleshooting rules and how to use them to 
analyze different computer problems.

13 Review steps in the installation of hard disks, soundcards, tape drives, 
cdroms, etc. What can go wrong during these installations?

14. Know the ways in which computers communicate problems and other 
information, e.g. beeps?

15. What are some of the commands that are useful in analyzing and 
correcting computer problems? (e.g. ATTRIB, FDISK, etc.)

16. What is the role of the power supply? What are the different connectors 
provided by the power supply? How have they changed over the years?

This material is covered in chapters 6-9 & 11, lectures and labs.
