Douglas Tallamy’s new book, The Nature of Oaks: The rich ecology of our most
essential native tree, is now available from Timber Press and several online
book sellers. It is well worth reading, detailing many aspects of oak ecology
that make it desirable as a forest component. Yes, I know only one oak, Quercus
garrayana, is native to the coastal PNW, but this book makes me want to try
again to grow even here, along the coast. It also reaffirms my plan to remove
all nonnative trees on my property and plant natives.
