Assistant Director for Residence Education

University Housing seeks qualified candidates for the position of Assistant 
Director for Residence Education. In addition to serving as senior member of 
the leadership team, the Assistant Director's primary responsibilities include: 
staff supervision, programs, retention initiatives, staff training, and 
management of daily operations in area of campus. Secondary responsibilities 
include, but are not limited to administrative functions, room assignments, and 
facilities management. The Assistant Director helps to create personal growth 
experiences by facilitating student development opportunities, as well as 
develop a sense of community in their area. This position calls for inspired, 
innovative, learner-centered leaders who value collaboration and personal 
involvement in the lives of our diverse students and professional staff 
members. University Housing is a part of the Division of Student Affairs and 
maintains cross-division partnerships.

Supervision Responsibilities 55%
*         Offer leadership for the planning and development of Living Learning 
Communities and academic initiatives within the residence halls and in 
collaboration with faculty
*         Ensure staff are provided the necessary orientation and training to 
navigate the policies and procedures within University Housing and the campus 
environment
*         Assess the skills and development of the Coordinators for Residence 
Education while providing experience and opportunities for professional growth
*         Directly supervise 5-8 Coordinators for Residence Education and 
indirectly supervise 1-4 Graduate Assistants
*         Provide indirect supervision and development for over 70 Resident 
Assistants in the area
*         Advocate for staff by helping them to navigate issues relating to 
work responsibilities and student concerns
*         Provide formal and informal training opportunities for full-time, 
graduate, and student staff

Administrative Responsibilities 25%
*         Assist with the design, planning, implementation of residential 
education programming
*         Work collaboratively to evaluate and analyze the student experience, 
student learning/engagement, and use the results to implement programs for 
continuous improvement
*         Participate in strategic planning activities to establish 
departmental and divisional goals
*         Complete annual report for University Housing in accordance of the 
guidelines established
*         Manage hall facilities by assisting staff in developing knowledge 
about hall upkeep, reporting, and tracking of intentional damages
*         Provide budgetary oversight of hall budgets in area of responsibility
*         Participate in crisis management and emergency response trainings and 
exercises
*         Serve on call for after-hours emergencies on a rotating basis for 
residential crisis response
*         Coordinate student staff training activities or selection processes 
for Residence Education
*         Serve as an active member of departmental and other University 
committees/task forces as assigned
*         Work collaboratively with housing and campus partners to ensure that 
the mission and vision of University Housing is accomplished.
*         This position does carry a University provided cell phone and should 
be accessible via voice calls, text messages, and email routed through the phone
*         Complete other duties consistent with the purpose of this position 
which may be assigned

Student and Community Development Responsibilities 20%
*         Develop an inclusive, academically supportive community in a select 
area of campus consisting of multiple halls
*         Assist staff in assessing student needs and provide educational and 
social programs to effectively meet those needs
*         Initiate and maintain positive relationships with students, faculty, 
staff, family members, and external constituents
*         Coordinate responses to unite student behavior concerns in accordance 
with the Student Standards and Conduct office, University Housing Handbook and 
Contract

Required Qualifications

*         Master's Degree in Student Affairs and Higher Education, or related 
field

*         4 years of full-time progressively responsible experience in Student 
Affairs

*         Supervision of various levels of staff (i.e. professional, graduate, 
paraprofessional)

Preferred Qualifications

*         Experience working with programs and/or residence hall based academic 
initiatives

*         Experience leading teams of full-time staff in training and 
development initiatives


Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
Ability to collaborate and direct activities of multiple groups of faculty, 
staff, and students.
Interpersonal, written, public speaking, and technical communication skills. 
Effective decision-making abilities. Knowledge of current and emerging trends 
and issues in university residential environments. Crisis management skills.

Education/Experience Required: Master's degree in Higher Education, College 
Student Personnel, or other related field and a minimum of 4 years full-time 
post masters higher education experience.
Desired:  Experience supervising full-time staff; a scholarly-practitioner 
approach to student affairs work; a commitment to professional development and 
academic achievement; and, the ability to lead and multi-task effectively in a 
changing department.

Mental Demands Required
Because of the sensitive nature of incidents involving students, staff members 
must be able to deal with students, faculty, and staff in confidential matters. 
 Must be able to generate solutions, function occasionally with minimum 
direction, collaborate with others, cope well with ambiguity, demonstrate 
initiative and personal resilience.

Physical Demands Required
Attendance, sight, speaking, write/type, and mobility to visit residence halls. 
 Possible exposure to chemicals, fumes, dirt, toxins, hazards, hot/cold, noise 
and blood.

Knowledge of Equipment Needed to Perform the Tasks
Computer with windows based operating system, scheduling, web-based 
programming, photo-copying/fax, training equipment, telephone.

Authority/Reportability
The Assistant Director Operations has the authority to make operational 
decisions for the programs within her/his area with general direction from the 
Director for Residence Education.  The Assistant Director for Residence 
Education is responsible for maintaining and staying within budget and staffing 
guidelines as established cooperatively with the Director of Residence 
Education.

This position requires a cell phone for communication and completion of job 
responsibilities and emergency response.  The cell phone number will be shared 
with departmental and campus partners.  If the staff member chooses to use 
their personal cell phone, it is understood that their personal cell phone 
number provided will be shared with departmental and campus partners as needed 
for work related communications.
