Hi everyone,

Good discussion points, thanks.

Just wondering whether one consideration on the university's behalf might
relate to how the learning platform would be supported.  I would tend to agree
in principle that academics should be free to employ their professional
judgment in matters relating to how they deliver their taught content, but
there may well be other considerations known only by those implementing the
university's IT policies.

Kind regards,

Completely agree!  However, preaching to the converted, I'm afraid:)

Of course, we should try!

Hi All

Thanks for this, James.  Perhaps it's time for a formal request, and to come
officially from more than one unit, department and College, so that we can
by-pass a common response of "You're the only person asking for this."  (And,
if it's against policy, then it simply requires a change in the policy).

I really think it's long past the time that SQU moves away from behaving as if
online learning is something that happens only inside an institutionally-based
LMS.  At least allow the choice.  And this might be a good starting point.

Do others think this is something worth pursuing?

Regards

Ken

Hi Ken,
Yes, the issue is CIS and the signup. We investigated this some time ago.
As it is against SQUs ICT policy regarding privacy and security, I understand
they will not do it.
We did not make a formal request though, just informal channels.

Subject: [squelearning] Google Classroom Anyone?

Hi

Does anyone on the list know of, or use, Google Classroom?  It's a Google-Based
LMS.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google_Classroom
https://classroom.google.com/

I want to experiment with it, but, in order to create a class, the institution
must have signed up for the G-Suite for Education
https://edu.google.com/intl/en-US/products/productivity-tools/#how-to
and I'm not sure if SQU has done so.

(And, yes, I am concerned about students' privacy, but, let's face it, with all
the cookies and gmail accounts and tracking of Google searches, etc, that horse
has been out in the pasture for a long time already :-)
