Site of the Day for Friday, April 30, 2010 foobar2000 1.0.2.1: Software of the Month This month's freeware focuses on one of the most widely respected audio players for the Windows platform -- foobar2000. With its latest release earlier this month, this current iteration extends its compatibility with Windows 7. Favored by audiophiles for its many features, sterling codecs and serious customization capabilities, foobar2000 offers noteworthy sound reproduction. Without the addition of supplemental audio software, in other words -- straight out of the box, it provides native support for an alphabet soup of formats: MP1, MP2, MP3, MP4, Musepack, AAC (Advanced Audio Coding - a lossy compression), Ogg Vorbis, FLAC (Free Lossless Audio Codec), Speex, WavPack, WAV, AIFF (Apple's Audio Interchange File Format), AU/SND, CDDA (standard Compact Disc Digital Audio), WMA, and Matroska. Dedicated music buffs will notice the inclusion of several lossless audio formats among the group. Toss in some additional codecs and the program will easily handle more than a dozen other varieties of audio compression. It also provides support for ReplayGain -- the normalization of volume for a number of audio formats. Incorporating a functional ID3 tag editor and user-friendly graphic equalizer, foobar2000 wears a customizable interface which can be tailored to suit individual preferences in layout, as well as offering visualizations of a graduated oscilloscope, peak meter, spectrum and VU (Volume Units) Meter. Additional features include a tracking console, and a first-rate Playlist Manager. For those with a constitutional aversion to using iTunes, foobar2000 can be adapted for use with Apple MP3 players through a complicated component add-on procedure, although like most applications attempting to bypass the Apple software, iTunes will still have to be installed initially. With a modest download size of under 3MB, a comprehensive list of features and an innovative and dedicated programming team, coupled with an enthusiastic user base, this audio player may be the definitive application in its genre.
