World Happiness Report 2017
Today's site offers the recent report on happiness compiled through the aegis
of the UN which ranks 155 countries according to a number of specific criteria.
Gentle Subscribers will discover details related to the rankings as well as the
complete list of countries and where they place in the standings.
The first World Happiness Report was published in April, 2012, in support of
the UN High Level Meeting on happiness and well-being. Since then the world has
come a long way. Increasingly, happiness is considered to be the proper measure
of social progress and the goal of public policy. In June 2016 the OECD
[Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development] committed itself 'to
redefine the growth narrative to put people's well-being at the center of
governments' efforts'." - from the website
Although the poorly designed website can pose a challenge for those seeking
information quickly, all the details contained within the document are
available. The complete report in PDF can be downloaded or alternatively opened
within a browser, while individual chapters have been provided as stand alone
files as well. Statistical information, the factors used in evaluating a
country's happiness -- such as social support, healthy life expectancy, and GDP
per capita among others -- and the reasons for those benchmarks are discussed
in the report. Chapter Two contains the country rankings list helpfully color
coded and with a precise score to three decimal places. It will not be
unexpected that the top 20 happiest countries are primarily western
industrialized nations but three of its entrants may come as a surprise.
