Vitamin C: Could It Cure Cancer?

Today's site, from the Why Files, takes a look at the very latest research
on vitamin C from studies conducted at Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions.
Gentle Subscribers, who never entirely lost faith in the pronouncements of
the famous Nobel laureate, may feel somewhat encouraged by the current
data.

"30 years ago, a legendary biochemist said vitamin C could cure cancer.
Har, har, said the scientific establishment. Now a mouse study shows C
fighting two cancers. Did brilliant scientist and peace activist Linus
Pauling get it right?" - from the website

This report, on the recent work undertaken on vitamin C, points to a shift
in understanding about the mechanism of how antioxidants may suppress the
growth of tumors. Covering the behavior of free radicals, their
relationship to changes in DNA and the newly discovered role of HIF-1
(hypoxia-induced protein), the article focuses on the potential of vitamin
C's ability to facilitate the termination of HIF-1 and how this might help
to stop the growth of tumors.
