The Science Events that Shaped the Year
Today's site from the respected science journal Nature offers a summary of the
top science news stories of 2017. Gentle Subscribers will discover a number of
significant events which colored the scientific landscape over the past year.
"A giant iceberg, a quantum-entanglement experiment and the death of a
spacecraft are among the year's top stories." - from the website
Opening with a dazzling photo from China's quantum-entanglement experiment, the
report heralds a "new era in astronomy" as scientists begin to study the
universe through emitted radiation and the resultant ripples in space-time.
Closer to home, the Cassini spacecraft ended its 13 year mission of Saturn
exploration. The break-off of an enormous iceberg in the Antarctic has the
summary pointing to concerns about about the condition of the Larsen C ice
shelf and referencing the impact of politics on the scientific community both
in the US and the UK. The review also notes developments in genetics that hold
out hope for a promising new cancer treatment which has received approval in
the US, while advances in assisted reproduction studies appear to indicate
