The Principles of Uncertainty by Maira Kalman

Today's site, from the New York Times, offers a series of columns from
author and illustrator Maira Kalman. Gentle Subscribers will find an artist
of unique sensibility, whose compelling work presents a remarkable
perspective.

"Maira Kalman is an illustrator, author and designer whose artwork is
featured in a new edition of Strunk and White's, 'The Elements of Style.'
She has created many covers for The New Yorker ... [and] 12 children's
books. ... In October, the first 12 columns [were] published in a book,
also called 'The Principles of Uncertainty.' Ms. Kalman lives in New York
City and teaches graduate courses in design at the School of Visual Arts."

Beginning with the column for May 2006, with a pilgrimage through Russia,
the artist's columns continue until the following April 2007. Within this
time frame, the artist undertakes a singular journey with vivid
illustrations and commentary in her inimitable style, most frequently
characterized as "whimsical". From striking photographs of people walking,
to observations on food and people -- the famous like Goethe and the
not-so-famous, like Sally -- these diverse artistic expressions are truly
singular.
