The Nano Apartment
Today's site from Inhabitat offers a look at a small, innovative living space
designed to provide modest but reasonably priced accommodation for University
of British Columbia students located in an area where housing is both
outrageously expensive and in tight supply. Gentle Subscribers, aware of
similar draconian housing conditions in many major US cities, will find this
example of a possible alternative to untenable rental situations an interesting
premise.
"The university has unveiled designs for the Nano Studio, a type of new
affordable student housing that would fit all of a students needs within a
140-square-foot unit. The fully furnished micro-apartments will serve as part
of a pilot project to help solve the shortage of affordable student housing
..." - from the website
The unveiling of the nano display unit at UBC was accompanied by a barrage of
media attention. Inhabitat's article provides a slideshow, individual photos,
and information on the apartment. A floor plan of its 140 square feet (13
square meters) and a brief virtual tour, along with details of the nano unit
are available, including its proposed rent estimated to be in the neighborhood
of $700 a month.
