        Churchill and the Great Republic

Today's site, from the U.S. Library of Congress, presents an absorbing
exhibit on Winston Churchill, with a special focus on his relationship with
America. Gentle Subscribers who enjoy a quiet rummage through the "sunlit
uplands" of history will find a superb presentation of primary source
documents, sound files of speeches and illuminating commentary on this
towering twentieth century figure.

"This exhibition examines the life and career of Winston Spencer Churchill
and emphasizes his lifelong links with the United States -- the nation he
called 'the Great Republic'. ... Comprised of six major sections, the
exhibition covers Churchill's life and achievements ... Three of the
sections deal with the World War II era, reflecting the enormous role
Churchill played in shaping the events of that critical period in world
history." - from the website

The site features letters, cartoons, photographs, maps and newspaper
clippings, highlighting Churchill's career, his views and his words. Audio
files of some of his famous speeches, along with original drafts are also
presented. The helpful "Checklist of Objects" provides a complete
hot-linked listing of the artefacts contained in the exhibit, while the
bibliography is an excellent reference for some of the best hard copy
publications by and about Churchill.
