Site of the Day for Thursday, September 30, 2004 Spybot Search and Destroy 1.3 - Software of the Month This month's software for the Windows platform has become one of the essential programs which should reside on every computer. Developed by Patrick M. Kolla, this application deals with the proliferation of the malware which has become a major headache for computer users. Like its cousin the anti-virus program, Spybot requires an up-to-date database to be effective. After installing the application, the user should immediately check for updates before putting the application through its paces. The program searches the user's hard drive to determine if any spyware has taken up residence and presents a list of the culprits found. The user may then chose to have the program delete the entries it has uncovered. Many experienced computer users may already have Lavasoft's "Ad-Aware" installed and may question the need for yet another application which performs essentially the same function. The two programs, however, complement each other and each will unearth evilware not found by the other. Spybot will create a backup of everything it fixes and store these in a Recovery list. These may subsequently removed by the user after determining that it is safe to do so. A further feature of the program is its "Immunization" function which will help prevent future infestations of spyware by installing a browser helper for Internet Explorer to forestall bad downloads as well as permanently blocking bad addresses. The download size of the application is approximately 4.25 MB. Spybot Search and Destroy is in the same league as anti-virus applications in terms of providing protection for vulnerable hard drives. No computer should be without it. March to the website for additional information and the download link at: http://www.spybot.info/en/home/index.html A.M.
