Site of the Day for Tuesday, September 28, 2004 Open Hearts / Closed Doors: The War Orphans Project Today's site, from the Vancouver Holocaust Education Centre, in conjunction with the Virtual Museum of Canada, is a stirring tribute to the Jewish children orphaned by World War II who found their way to Canada in the aftermath of the Holocaust. Gentle Subscribers will discover simply written accounts of the heartrending experiences of a group of these children. "After the war, a group of young Jewish orphans immigrated to Canada from the devastation of Europe as part of the War Orphans Project. Using their own words and artifacts, this virtual exhibit tells the story of the orphans' courage and resilience and of the tireless efforts of the people who helped them." - from the website The exhibit details the accounts of eight of these war orphans who came from various European countries after World War II. By clicking on the photos of these children at the top of the home page, the visitor is taken to the recollections of their experiences during and after the war. Included in the presentation are graphics of the few artefacts which they have from those times, complete with annotations. In addition, the sidebar on the left offers more general information on topics such as liberation, displaced persons camps and the journey to North America. Further resources are available, including a glossary, complete transcripts of the orphans stories, suitable web links and a teacher's guide.
