        Herbal Safety

Today's site from the University of Texas (El Paso) and the Austin Campus's
Cooperative Pharmacy Program, offers sound advice about a broad range of
herbs used for medicinal purposes. Gentle Subscribers who want
authoritative scientific information on herbal remedies, will find this
site an excellent reference.

"The website has two primary purposes: To disseminate information about
research findings related to herbal use ..., as well as to provide
information about the safety of herbal product use in both English and
Spanish. This feature makes it one of the few bilingual websites
specifically developed to disseminate non-commercial information about
medicinal plants. ... In the past two decades, there has been a dramatic
increase in the use of herbal products ... Unfortunately, some of the
information currently available about medicinal plants is either
misleading, or simply lacking." - from the website

This site presents scientific information for the general public on forty
commonly used medicinal herbs in its "Herbal Fact Sheet" database. Each
herb is displayed with a colored photo, its common and scientific names,
where it is found, how it is used, what its used for and any safety
precautions which should be taken into consideration. In addition, there
are articles on the top selling herbal products in the U.S., the popularity
of herbal medicine and the importance of the true identity of herbs. The
Scientific Monographs contain technical information relating to clinical
trials, if any, and currently available medical data.
