        How Hypnosis Works

Today's site, from HowStuffWorks, delves into the obscure realm of
hypnosis. Gentle Subscribers who are convinced they could never be
hypnotized, will find an interesting presentation of the latest theories
and information on this process and how it is used.

"When you hear the word hypnosis, you may picture the mysterious hypnotist
figure popularized in movies, comic books and television ... guiding his
subject into a semi-sleep, zombi-like state. Once hypnotized, the subject
is compelled to obey ... This popular representation bears little
resemblance to actual hypnotism ... [T]he phenomenon is still a mystery of
sorts. In this article, we'll look at some popular theories of hypnosis and
explore the various ways hypnotists put their art to work." - from the
website

The site explains the physical and mental characteristics of the hypnotic
state, the latter through scientific research using electroencephalographic
measurements of brain activity. Focusing on the popular current theory that
hypnosis allows the subconscious mind to come to the fore, the essay
explores the suggestibility exhibited by hypnotized subjects. The most
common methods of inducing hypnosis are discussed along with a brief look
at related "trance" states such as meditation. Wrapping up the report are
the uses of hypnosis, from the fun of stage shows to serious applications
in medicine, psychiatry and forensic science. A note outlining a more
skeptical position on this still controversial process concludes the
presentation.
