Grist: It's Gloom And Doom With A Sense Of Humor

Today's site, from the Washington state-based non-profit organization
Grist, presents a first-class journal dealing with environmental issues.
Gentle Subscribers will find a refreshing take on ecological news as well
as a high standard of reporting.

"Let's face it: reading environmental journalism too often feels like
eating your vegetables. Boiled. With no butter. ... But at Grist, we
believe that news about green issues and sustainable living doesn't have to
be predictable, demoralizing, or dull. We butter the vegetables! And add
salt! And strain metaphors! ...We exist to tell the untold stories,
spotlight trends before they become trendy, and engage the apathetic. ...
And while we take our work seriously, we don't take ourselves seriously,
because of the many things this planet is running out of, sanctimonious
tree-huggers ain't one of them. ...Grist: it's gloom and doom with a sense
of humor." - from the website

The site provides news and features, currently ranging from an article on
Morgan Freeman's "everyman approach to planetary protection" to "how the
meat industry continues to thrive, even as its costs rise." Germane topics
deal with energy, elections, food, green living, business and agriculture,
among others, while the Grist Mill offers a "blogful of leafy green
commentary". Additional highlights include a How Green Is Your Candidate
section with fact sheets and interviews with a number of prominent U.S.
politicians, the journal's own engaging columnists, and a weekly podcast.
